Professional development for Personal Tutoring
Personal Tutoring is recognised as a student-centred form of teaching that supports individual students’ learning and development. The aim of this practice is to develop students’ independent learning skills, reflective practice and problem-solving attitudes while also guiding students to understand course expectations, system and policies.
Personal Tutoring at NTU

At Nottingham Trent University (NTU), professional development for personal tutoring scholarship started in 2018.
Since then, over 600 colleagues have participated in the tutoring programme that aims to develop proactive, inclusive tutoring practice that uses coaching and mentoring as evidence-based approaches.
The commercial package is designed for:
- UK Higher Education Providers (in person and/or online)
- International Higher Education Providers (online only)
Workshop package
The commercial package is designed to support Higher Education institutions in developing their personal tutoring approach at an institutional, departmental or course level, and to provide the staff development that sits alongside its implementation.

In the initial scoping meeting we will work with you to establish your needs and expectations so sessions can be tailored to the needs of your individual institutional context.
This workshop is suitable for participants with no previous experience or knowledge of personal tutoring, or for those team who want to revisit the purpose and expectations related to this practice.
The workshop covers the fundamental principles of Personal Tutoring practice, including:

This workshop is suitable for more experienced personal tutoring practitioners who are looking to develop their coaching and mentoring skills and techniques that aim to develop autonomous and self-reflective students.

- Coaching and mentoring skills and self-assessment
- Practice of coaching conversations

This workshop is suitable for participants who have attended the first workshop or who have a basic underpinning knowledge of personal tutoring practice and scholarship.
The workshop is designed to guide participants in designing their own personal tutoring statement and approach. Taking into consideration your own context, you will be guided through creating a personal tutoring strategy, objectives and approach.
The workshop covers:
- What holistic personal tutoring means
- Examples of best practice
- Activities for designing holistic personal tutoring
- Reflection and peer feedback
