Harsh Sagar, Global Youth Biodiversity Network UK
Where do you volunteer?
I currently volunteer for the Global Youth Biodiversity Network UK chapter (GYBN) and have previously volunteered with the Environmental Law Foundation and NLS. I have also volunteered with various organisations through the NTU Conservation Society! I have also volunteered abroad with REGUA, a nature reserve in Brazil.
Why did you want to volunteer? / Why is it important to you?
Volunteering is important to me as it enables me to gain new skills in a different environment. Volunteering also enables me to give back to different communities in various ways and allows me to help out with work where I can see the change happening.
What impact has volunteering had on you? / How has volunteering helped you?
I have been able to enhance my CV as I have gained numerous skills through volunteering (especially in a range of careers). For example, volunteering with NLS has enabled me to gain transferable legal skills. Furthermore, volunteering has allowed me to 'try something new' and go out of my comfort zone, making lots of new friends and connections along the way.
What advice would you give to people thinking about volunteering or to those who think 'volunteering isn't for them?
I would definitely recommend volunteering a small amount of time to test how its like. Even a small amount can really help another person/organisation/company.
Volunteering is for everyone and the gratification that comes with helping out is amazing! Besides, there are lots of opportunities to enhance your CV and gain a lot of transferable skills for your future career.
