Namita Sharma, Food for All Nottingham
Where do you volunteer?
Currently, I’m volunteering at 'Food For All Nottingham', an independent charity providing freshly cooked hot meals, snacks and hot & cold drinks to people in need. I'm also registered with organisations like the British Heart Foundation and FareShare to dedicate my free time into volunteering with them.
At NTU, I’ve volunteered with 'Help In The Community' Society, which was also awarded Society of the Year of its incredible service across the community. I volunteered as a Maths Session Leader for primary school children with 'Rackets Cubed x NTU Sport' at NTU Clifton Campus, and also with NTU Sustainability Society's Litter Picking around The Arboretum 'Keep Britain Tidy' Campaign.
Why is volunteering important to you?
As cliché as it might seem, my reason to volunteer is to give back to the community and make a positive impact. Even if it is a small impact in the bigger idea of changing the world for better, I have always been passionate about helping others in any way I can and here at NTU, it's highly encouraged. It’s important to me because it allows me to help those in need and contribute to a better society, while also fostering a sense of connection and purpose.
Volunteering gives me the chance to meet incredible people from diverse backgrounds and learn from their experiences. Plus, it's a great way to develop new skills and challenge myself in different ways.
What impact has volunteering had on you?
Volunteering has enriched my life by teaching me empathy, enhancing my communication skills, increasing my confidence and providing me a sense of fulfilment. It has opened my eyes to various social issues. It has shown me the value of treating people with kindness and shown me just how important community support and solidarity really are.
What advice would you give to anyone thinking about volunteering?
I’d encourage everyone to give volunteering a go. It’s a rewarding experience that can fit any schedule or interest. Volunteering isn’t just about giving; it’s also about personal growth, meeting new people, and gaining new skills. You might discover a new passion or talent you didn’t know you had.
There's a role for everyone and it's one of the places where you'll always feel welcomed because you're there to do something good and positive. Plus, the connections you make and the impact you can have on others' lives are truly invaluable.
