Kirsty Carr, The Spencer Trust
During my study abroad at Nottingham Trent University, I had the opportunity to give back to the local community while building my skills. When I saw that The Spencer Trust was looking for volunteers, I immediately wanted to get involved to support an often misunderstood community.
This experience not only allowed me to grow professionally by honing my social media, design, and content creation skills but also gave me the chance to meet and work with a group of kind and supportive individuals, many of whom I now consider friends.
One of the most fulfilling aspects of the role was witnessing people who were generally more reserved come out of their shells during events, such as hikes, where they felt comfortable being themselves in a safe and welcoming environment.
A particular highlight was Nottingham Pride, where we raised funds for a good cause and celebrated as everyone expressed their true selves with joy and pride.
I cannot recommend volunteering for the Spencer Trust enough. I really wish I didn't have to leave the UK so I could stay volunteering for them.
