Tim Leach, Director of Civil & Structural Engineering shares why Morson Praxis use apprentices
Apprentices
Morson-Praxis takes on a range of apprentices across its core business functions, including Civil and Structural Engineering, Building Services, and Project Management.
We have been working with NTU for courses for several years now....We have always found NTU to be really thorough and keep really up to date with what they’re teaching the students, with the Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs) evidencing this with the new technologies that we are researching in partnership with them.

Business Need
We have always invested heavily in the learning and development of our people, with individuals dating back to 2002 being enrolled onto level 3 apprenticeships and courses, and us sponsoring them through their HNCs, HNDs and degrees. Since the introduction of degree apprenticeships in 2015, we have gradually enrolled more and more employees across all levels onto the courses and find that the employees on apprenticeships learn far more than colleagues who have completed full time courses and can learn whilst delivering.
Goals & Objectives
Morson Praxis set out to:
- Enhance early careers pathways through structured learning and mentoring
- Sustain strong employee retention by investing in long-term development
- Make use of the apprenticeship levy to fund meaningful qualifications
- Build a future-ready workforce with in-demand technical skills
- Strengthen university partnerships, particularly with NTU
Our Approach
Morson Praxis has built a robust apprenticeship framework, working closely with NTU and other partners to ensure apprentices receive up-to-date, industry-relevant training. Every apprentice is matched with a mentor who supports them through core competencies and personal development.
Apprentices participate in regular CPD and are encouraged to go above and beyond their course learning. Social responsibility is embedded in the culture, with all employees encouraged to take part in initiatives such as Waldeck’s annual ‘Charity Day’.
Positive Impact
- Increased productivity due to being to train the apprentices in the “Morson Praxis way” of doing things alongside their university course, helping them to quickly pick up the company’s ways of working, as opposed to coming from a different employer.
- Degree apprentices bring fresh ideas and perspectives
- An apprentice, has become skilled in both civil and structural software—making him one of few in the industry with such dual capability
- Live project involvement from early stages, supported by structured onboarding
- Participation in local community projects, including transforming a local school through volunteering
"It’s been inspiring to witness our apprentices development, both personally and professionally, as he’s grown into a highly valued and integral member of our Civil and Structural team. His progress reflects exactly what our early careers development programme strives to achieve, nurturing our own talent and supporting individuals on their path to becoming fully qualified, chartered engineers"
