Apprentices

To date, we have supported ten Level 6 apprentices through our partnership with NTU - averaging at least one placement each year - with further recruitment planned as part of our new five‑year business plan

Many of our apprentices have progressed and been promoted throughout the course of their apprenticeships and have gone on to senior roles within the business. It allows us to attract, develop and retain top talent within the industry

Course

Level 6 Chartered Surveyor, Degree Apprenticeship (Quantity Surveyor Pathway)

Outcomes

  • Enhanced employee skills and qualifications
  • Improved business performance
  • Increased staff motivation and aspirations
  • Stronger Local Partnerships
  • Effective workforce development

My apprenticeship has provided the opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience, improve my confidence and grow my own professional network, all alongside studying for a degree. It allows me to learn faster and more effectively by combining theory with practice, while also working towards my RICS APC qualification to become a chartered quantity surveyor at a much-accelerated pace

Michael McAllister , Level 6 Chartered Surveyor (QS Pathway) Degree Apprentice.

Business Need

Over the past few years, we’ve undergone significant business transformation and secured some of our largest client instructions to date. At the same time, the construction sector continues to face a well-documented skills shortage, so investing in talent early has become increasingly important. Partnering with NTU and employing apprentices has been key to helping us futureproof our workforce, creating a pipeline of home-grown, highly skilled professionals to support our growth now and in the future.

Goals & Objectives

  • Address skills shortages: Build a sustainable pipeline of talent to mitigate industry-wide recruitment challenges.
  • Establish a talent development pathway: Create structured routes from entry-level through to chartered professionals.
  • Embed company culture early: Train apprentices in Gateley RJA processes and ways of working from the outset.
  • Support business growth: Ensure access to junior talent to support increasing client demand and project workload.
  • Enhance social value: Provide local employment opportunities, particularly within the East Midlands.

Our Approach

We chose the apprenticeship route because it allows us to grow our own talent and build teams that deliver exceptional results for our clients. Apprentices bring fresh perspectives, energy and ambition, helping us strengthen our succession pipeline and develop future leaders within the business.
NTU stood out to us as a training provider due to its strong industry reputation for delivering high-quality, relevant training. With offices in Leicestershire and Nottingham, partnering with NTU also supports our social value commitments by creating local career opportunities within the East Midlands.
We work with NTU on the Chartered Surveyor Level 6 Degree Apprenticeship (Quantity Surveying Pathway). The training complements the work our apprentices are doing day-to-day, and we really value the support provided to both the apprentices and the business. NTU offers consistent, structured support through regular progress reviews, mentor engagement and training for our workplace mentors, alongside wider recruitment and employer support. This collaborative approach helps ensure a smooth and positive experience for both our apprentices and the business.

Positive Impact

To date, we have supported ten quantity surveying apprentices through our partnership with NTU. Many of those apprentices have now progressed into senior roles with management responsibilities.

“The biggest benefit of apprenticeships for our consultancy has been the ability to grow our own talent — attracting, developing and retaining individuals who go on to deliver great outcomes for our clients. Through our partnership with NTU, we’ve supported ten apprentices to date, typically recruiting at least one each year”

Liza Julian, Director of Corporate Services, Gateley RJA
