- A: How to develop a graduate scheme: Top tips for smaller businesses
If you consistently hire 5+ graduates each year, you might be considering re-packaging your hiring process as a graduate scheme. This session will share tips and guidance for how to kick start that process, with particular emphasis on advertising methods and tools for engaging with the right kinds of students and graduates.
- B: On-Campus Companies: Developing your brand in student territory
Being a small employer in a sea of corporates can feel futile, particularly when it comes to careers fairs, branding and student engagement. This session explores options for raising your campus profile in both traditional and less conventional ways.
- A: Fantastic final interviews: Techniques for improving your chances of getting the ‘right’ person
This session will walk through different types of interview questions, and what kinds of responses you can expect. Students are savvy to competency based questions (“tell me about a time when…”) so participants can expect to learn about alternative questioning styles and how to score them. Mixing up your question set should elicit more honest responses from candidates.
- B: Work-based tasks: Finding the cream of the crop at final interview
One of the best ways to assess a candidate’s suitability for a role is to test their skills via a real-world task. Whether the vacancy is in marketing, manufacturing or maths; a well-designed work-based task will test candidates’ abilities and give them a flavour for the tasks they could expect in the role. You will have the opportunity to review some work-based tasks.
- A: All about on-boarding: getting your new hires off the starting blocks
First impressions count, and how you welcome your new employees on their first day, and within their initial weeks, can be critical for retention. We’ll spend time looking at the do’s and don’ts of on-boarding, and how you can set yourself apart from other employers and ensure your new team members get off to a flying start.
- B: Coaching and mentoring for line managers
Graduates consistently rate their line manager as critical to their early career experiences, and as a line manager you will be the most influential person in shaping their performance and attitude – which can be a daunting task! The session centres around using the principles of coaching and mentoring to help line managers to support, develop and challenge someone at the start of their career.
Kylie is a talented facilitator and experienced project manager. Kylie project managed the RISE internship programme, working with range of public and private sector stakeholders and hundreds of regional SMEs, and is lead facilitator for NTU’s ‘Innovation Community Lab’, developing early-career line managers to instigate and manage periods of change through innovation. Through these public-sector contracts she has delivered training to hundreds of teams and supported them with various recruitment, resourcing, coaching and learning and development needs. Kylie is also currently studying for her MSc in Human Resource Management, so prides herself on being up to date with the latest academic publications and business case studies.
Gabi has substantial experience of a broad range of University functions including undertaking a seven-month secondment to Kingston University, London, acting firstly as an Employability Consultant and then as a Placement Officer for the faculty of Science, Engineering and Computing. Previously, she held the position of Welfare Officer for Sheffield Students' Union from 2015 – 2016 where she developed an in-depth knowledge of current issues in Higher Education. In addition to this, Gabi has experience of recruiting and developing graduates across a broad range of businesses, from SMEs to large national corporates. As well as leading the graduate selection process for ARK Teacher Training, she currently manages RISE SCR, a corporate-style graduate recruitment programme for SMEs across the Sheffield City Region, and has screened and assessed graduates across a huge spectrum of disciplines, from Engineering to Fundraising.
Hannah has previously worked in Higher Education, holding a senior role at the University of Leicester within their Career Development Service with significant experience of achieving excellent results within this sector. At Leicester, she played a key role in supporting the University to be nominated as one of the Times Top 20 UK Universities. Her primary focus was developing their Career Development Journey, helping students become more employable and brokering relationships with both high-profile employers (such as PwC and Coca-Cola) and SMEs. Part of this work involved developing and managing the university’s placement scheme and designing their employer facing brand. Hannah can share her breadth of experience and knowledge in managing both leadership and technical specialist graduate programmes. Whilst at the Co-operative she was responsible for their leadership programme before moving into a role to manage The Co-operative Pharmacy Pre-registration programme, employing 200 graduates and 600 summer placements per year. Under her leadership the graduate programme was not only one of the highest climbers in the Times Top 100 Graduate Employers but also won accolades along the way for Diversity and Inclusion and Employer of Choice.

An Award Winning, Lean, Innovation & Digital leader who has vast experience in Continuous Improvement & Disruptive Innovation. In his current role, Bal and his team, work closely with the business units at Coca-Cola European Partners, in understanding the current state and then developing new ideas & concepts that can help exceed targets and objectives. This is achieved by using Lean Start-up principles.
As a certified Lean Sigma Black Belt, he holds extensive knowledge and experience in delivering Improvement Projects and Programmes of work using Lean and Six Sigma principles in Europe, Asia and North America.
Bal has also been a keynote speaker at many high-profile events, where he is always keen to share with others his knowledge and experiences, and extracts from his written work including, ‘How Not to Innovate’ and his monthly Linkedin posts.
Prior to joining Coca-Cola Enterprises, he worked at GlaxoSmithKline (Lean Six Sigma Black Belt), Parker Hannifin (European Lean Leader, Chomerics Division) and Kodak Ltd. (Graduate Programme, Project Manager).
