Healthier Options Takeaways for SMEs

Exploring ways that food and drink businesses can offer healthier choices to their customers, whilst keeping great quality and taste.

In collaboration with Nottinghamshire County Council, Nottingham Trent University is running a series of events led by NTU experts to explore ways in which businesses might reduce salt, fat and sugar in their dishes.

Offering healthier choices to customers doesn’t have to mean compromising on flavour or pushing up costs. The emphasis of these workshops will be on simple, easy to implement ideas that aim to meet HOT guidelines whilst maintaining the great taste and quality that customers have come to expect.

The workshops will comprise of a series of short sessions covering:

  • Fat reduction
  • Salt reduction
  • Sugar reduction
  • Portion control

The speaker for these events is Jan Newnham, NTU Food & Drink Innovation Hub

Before joining the Food & Drink Innovation Hub in August 2017, Jan spent many years working in product development for several food and drink manufacturers including Adam’s Food Ingredients (now Ornua) and KP Snacks. She now works to support small businesses helping them to innovate and grow through the Enabling Innovation programme.


What is HOT?

The HOT merit scheme is run by Nottinghamshire County Council and our District and Borough Council partners. Together we're aiming to increase the amount and variety of healthier options in takeaways across Nottinghamshire to help consumers to maintain a more balanced diet.

These include, but are not exclusive to, low fat, low salt and low sugar options; all topics regularly discussed with regards to healthy eating and healthy living.
