Tailored for anyone intrigued by the world of creating immersive visual experiences, it invites you to explore the fundamentals of installation and assemblage art.

You’ll explore contemporary approaches to visual language and associated philosophical discussions and gain insights into curatorial values, honing your skills in the thoughtful curation of spaces and the strategic display of objects, transforming your understanding of art in a modern context.

If you’re fascinated by the transformative power of art, then this course will provide you with a solid foundation in engaging with installation.

  • You’ll be part of a design community in our creative studio culture; one that promotes discussion and collaboration, and encourages experimentation and the constant swapping of ideas.
  • With a limited class size you'll have the one-to-one attention you need to ensure you leave with the skills to continue developing your designs at home or work.

What you’ll study

Embark on a journey of creative exploration, discovering different methods of selecting and juxtaposing objects that amplify both their narrative and visual impact.

On this course you’ll develop the art of confident presentation as you learn to showcase and contextualize your creations and understand the crucial role of presentation in the world of installation art, empowering you to communicate your artistic vision with clarity and conviction.

Through individual and group projects you’ll learn to plan, create, and contextualise compelling assemblage and installation art pieces that resonate with depth and meaning.

The ideas explored within these spaces may be profound, confrontational, or aesthetically challenging…but our journey through them will involve plenty of humour too!

During this course, you will:

  • delve into the fascinating study of signs and symbols, unravelling the intricate world of semiotics and its profound impact on interpreting art
  • explore the formal elements of line, tone, colour, and form, gaining an understanding of how these elements contribute to the rich tapestry of visual language
  • engage in practical and theoretical projects using carefully selected and found objects
  • navigate the reading of objects as texts, incorporating semiotics (the study of signs and symbols), colour theory, interpretation, and curation
  • explore the rich history of installation art and contemporary artists
  • explore different ways of selecting and juxtaposing objects to maximise their the narrative and visual impact
  • display and contextualise your own work with confidence.

Here’s a breakdown of what you’ll study during the course.

The course will begin with the drawn line, then we shall explore colour using paint, form using sculpture.

Focusing on installation and conceptual art you will use objects and space to formalise your ideas.

Upon completing this course you will have the knowledge and confidence to select, manipulate, and display objects as artworks in various contexts.

You’ll be able to use specialist vocabulary with confidence and have developed your understanding and engagement with installation art both theoretically and practically.

This course will be delivered in person on Nottingham Trent University city campus.

Tutor profile:

Chris Lewis-Jones

is an artist/flanuer who travels across disciplines, media and contexts.

He is based at Primary in Nottingham, but is also an Associate Artist at Nottingham Contemporary and Art & Craft Lead Tutor for the WEA across the East Midlands.

Although his work has been influenced by the theory and practice of psychogeography, drawing remains central to his practice, and he is never without a sketchbook!

In addition to enjoying analytical drawing, Chris also explores expressionistic approaches to mark making and has been commissioned to undertake drawing performances at galleries and other venues across the country.

The course is designed to prepare you to succeed in the design industry; students who have taken this course have come from a wide variety of industries.

On successful completion of the course you will receive a certificate of attendance, which will further enhance your CV.

Campus and facilities

You will be based in the Waverley Building, a beautifully restored, listed building with real design heritage in the School of Art and Design on the City Campus.

You will work in the Dame Laura Knight studio: a large, airy drawing space that is well-equipped with easels and space to develop your ideas and create exciting work.

You’ll also have access to our library to use outside of your short course; whilst you can’t reserve or take away books, you are welcome to use them as a resource for research and referencing.

You will receive an email one week before the course starts with joining instructions on where to go for the first day.

Level: Open to all.

Entry requirement: Beginners, as well as those with some experience in art, are welcome.

You must be over the age of 18 in order to attend this course.
