Please note: This course is delivered through the Enterprising Ashfield project, which is funded by the Government's Towns Fund. Nottingham Trent University (NTU) is pleased to offer free (fully funded) places on this course to support individuals and employees of businesses that are based in the towns of Kirkby-in-Ashfield and Sutton-in-Ashfield.

The standard fee would normally be £435.

On this course, you'll learn the essentials of working productively and efficiently in an office administration environment to become successful in your profession.

You'll learn essential skills suitable for all administrative professionals, from organisation skills to business etiquette, and from effective communication techniques to understanding the latest technology.

It's ideal for anyone who is just starting out or in the early stages of their professional career and looking for a boost in a competitive sector.

It's also suitable for anyone who would like a change in their career and would like to know more about working in an office environment.

With a limited number of places on the course, you'll have the one-to-one attention you need to ensure you leave with the skills to continue developing your skills at home or work.

What you’ll study

On this course you'll learn the essentials of working productively and efficiently in an office administration environment.

This course will provide you with an opportunity to master the fundamentals of the Microsoft Office suite, as well as gain confidence in communicating with a range of stakeholders.

During this course you will:

  • learn how to work with colleagues and as part of a team, focusing on communication skills
  • practice professional etiquette, from answering a phone and composing emails to presenting a professional and friendly image to internal and external stakeholders
  • consider how to communicate successfully in challenging situations and when to be assertive
  • understand how to manage calendars, diaries and emails, and effective notetaking
  • plan your time effectively and enhance your productivity through project planning and task prioritisation
  • recognise how to work effectively away from the office when working remotely, and how to get the most from online meetings
  • learn how to structure your presentations to make the biggest impact in communications with a variety of stakeholders.

It's delivered through lectures, group discussions, classroom activities and real-life examples.

You'll get to know your way around Microsoft Office applications including Teams, Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint, focusing on their key function, formatting and creating engaging presentations.

You'll look at the various career pathways within office administration and how to boost your CV to get noticed when applying for an administration role.

What will you gain?

By the end of the course, you’ll have gained confidence to make a good start and thrive in an office environment.

You'll leave with a greater understanding of the nature of the administration sector and your key role within it.

You'll also receive a certificate of attendance when you complete the course, which is a great way to enhance your CV.

Tutor profile: András Fésüs

András is an accomplished education management professional who has worked at higher education institutions across the Midlands, including Coventry University, De Montfort Univeresity, the University of Nottingham, and Nottingham Trent University.

He originally trained as a language teacher and started his own language school, and also delivers leadership training courses for managers.

András is particularly skilled in giving feedback; his delegates achieve a great deal in a short time, surprising themselves with the level and range of their writing and communication skills.
