How does one lead and manage an organisation in the context of complex relationships, shared challenges and conflicting interests? How can senior leaders leverage their organisation to influence wider systems and networks in the interest of responsible and sustainable business?

The Leading in Organisations and Systems Executive Education short course will provide the tools for systems thinking and develop the capacities for leading sustainably in complex contexts. The two-day course brings together cutting-edge research on systems leadership, responsible business, and sustainability.

The main aims are to:

  • Understand management and leadership issues and trends in organisations.
  • Understand organisations and their ecosystems from a systems perspective.
  • Systemically manage ethical risks in the organisation.
  • Support responsible and sustainable employee engagement and performance, individually and in teams.
  • Engage in strategic thinking in complex systems.

What you'll study

The programme focuses on building leadership expertise through a systems approach.

How you’re taught

The course has been carefully designed to facilitate experiential learning and interaction. A physical ‘welcome pack’ will be delivered to each participant before the programme begins.  This way, we combine online platforms and interactions with physical materials and activities to stimulate creative and embodied engagement.

Online delivery

The course is delivered over two days through a virtual platform. Each day entails three two-hour sessions online.

At the end of the programme, you will be able to:

Programme leads

Mollie Painter is Professor of Ethics and Organisation and leads the Responsible and Sustainable Business Lab (RSB Lab), a bespoke research centre within Nottingham Business School (NBS). The RSB Lab is dedicated to the promotion and dissemination of research, training and practitioner engagement around responsible and sustainable business practice. Professor Painter’s teaching is focused on integrating responsible leadership, ethics and accountability into NBS’s postgraduate programmes. She is also active in executive development programmes and consultancy activities in these areas.

Elmé Vivier is a Senior Research Fellow in the RSB Lab. Her role involves conceptualising, managing and contributing to research projects, and producing and disseminating research outputs. She manages and co-facilitates the Values-Driven Leadership executive development course, which is offered in South Africa, Kenya and Egypt, and teaches on the Responsible and Sustainable Leadership MBA module.

Entry requirements

The course is for leaders and managers responsible for ethics, compliance and risk in their organisation, for human resources, or in key decision-making roles (audit, finance, supply chain, etc.) with a desire to develop their leadership skills.
