This course will guide you through selecting and using appropriate heritage materials in the repair, care, maintenance and upgrading of heritage buildings and assets.
It’s useful for anyone in the construction sector who’s looking to gain a better understanding of the challenges posed by listed, historic and older buildings.
The course will introduce you to the legal framework in place in the UK to ensure that repairs are appropriate and proportionate, meeting the requirements of the local authority and Historic England.
You’ll look at how to apply retrofit technologies to meet the climate change challenged of the future without compromising the heritage aesthetic and character of our cities, towns and villages.

What you’ll study
On the course, you will:
- be introduced to heritage buildings and conservation
- identify, record and evaluate different architectural periods and styles within their social, economic and physical contexts
- learn about the regulatory and legislative framework in the UK
- develop an understanding of heritage construction techniques and materials
- look at the sustainable reuse and adaptation of heritage buildings and assets
- practise retrofitting for heritage buildings and assets.
- understand the main legal and practical constraints controlling works on historic buildings
- be able to make informed decisions for selecting the most appropriate advice on the sympathetic maintenance, repair, conversion, conservation and retrofitting
- have designed and specified appropriate upgrades to vernacular property, including choices for retrofit and enhancing energy performance
- be confident in identifying differences in heritage construction techniques and materials
- be able to interact effectively with both the owners of heritage buildings and those involved in carrying out the work
- be able to demonstrate a range of transferable skills that be will valuable in the workplace.
How you’re taught
Teaching and learning will take place using a programme of lectures, workshops, short projects and group discussions.

City Campus facilities
Many of your lectures and seminars will take place in the Newton building on our City Campus.
IT resources
Our IT resource rooms and PC clusters are distributed across our City Campus, with PCs providing access to Microsoft Office, email, web browsing, networked file storage and high-speed online printing services, with a free printing allowance for each student.
Resource rooms are available 24 hours a day.
Books and library resources
Our state-of-the-art Boots library will give you access to an extensive and diverse range of books and periodicals that focus on specialist areas within the built environment. The library's OneSearch system provides access to all our electronic resources, journals and books.
Within the library there is a liaison librarian who has specialist subject knowledge and can offer detailed help in finding and using print and electronic resources, and also with areas such as Harvard referencing and research skills.
Workshops and laboratories
Our Maudslay building boasts a number of industry-standard workshops and facilities. Supported by a team of expert technical staff, we offer woodwork and metal workshops, model-making studios, structural testing equipment, concrete, soil and materials laboratories.
