Introduction:
This course will provide prospective civil engineers with an understanding of the complex political, cultural, economic and financial environments within which civil engineering, architectural design and construction organisations operate at both a strategic organisational and individual project level.
Course dates: 30 November and 7 December 2024 and 15 February and 1 March 2025, Saturdays 9 am - 5 pm (four days).
What you’ll study
During the course you will explore the strategic needs and capabilities required to plan and manage a business in complex environments such as learning from manufactures and lean thinking, understanding project and risk management and cover a range of different management techniques and tools.

- By the end of this course, you’ll be able to:
- The nature of the civil engineering, architectural and construction market at an international, national and local level.
- Business strategy, the strategic management process, strategic options, and implementation.
- Challenges faced by civil engineering generally and construction specifically.
- Internal organisational audit and analysis, leadership and managing change.
- Project management scope, philosophies and techniques
- Leadership, team working and stakeholder management
- Risk management
- Estimating, planning and controlling project time and costs.
- evaluate the different and complex environments within which civil engineering, design and construction organisations operate
- determine and critically discuss the nature of different business strategies and their implementation
- summarise and evaluate the strategic and implementation capabilities required to plan and manage a business in a multiplicity of complex environments and organisation structures
- explore the social, cultural and political diversity between peoples in order to promote tolerance, understanding and acceptance of those diversities to reduce cultural barriers between parties in construction projects and/or in the construction industry.
You’ll also be able to critically identify and analyse complex inter-related data, information and processes through interrogation and debate.
You’ll be able to participate and communicate confidently on a range of issues affecting the corporate world and projects within a civil engineering context.
A CPD certificate will be issued upon successful completion of the course.
Successful completion can also contribute 15 credits towards a postgraduate award.
How you’re taught
Teaching and learning will take place using a flexible programme of lectures, workshops, computer labs, seminars and tutorials.

Entry requirements
Level: Professional/postgraduate
Entry Requirements: You should have a minimum of three years’ professional experience and have the support of your employer to integrate study and projects into your day-to-day work.
You will probably be employed on significant infrastructure or building works, with experience of developing and coordinating projects.
If you wish to receive credit, you should also have a 2:2 honours degree in a construction-related subject.
Applicants with non-standard entry qualifications and/or relevant experience will be considered on an individual basis.
