Introduction:

This course provides an introduction to Bloodstain Pattern Analysis (BPA). The course will include an overview of the types of bloodstain patterns, as well as providing the underpinning theoretical knowledge and terminology required for interpretation of staining. You will gain the knowledge required to identify different bloodstain patterns and enable basic interpretation of them within a forensic context.

During this course you will study:

  • History and development of BPA
  • Human circulatory system and morphology of blood
  • Bloodstain types including the mechanism of stain formation
  • Protocols and techniques involved in BPA for different forensic contexts.

This MTSA (Medical Technologies Skills Academy) course is aimed at both Medical Device and in vitro Diagnostic companies operating within the EU and CE Mark dependant territories, where the new Medical Device Regulation 2017/745 (MDR) and/or the new in vitro Diagnostic Medical Devices Regulation 2017/746 (IVDR) is recognised. It is also applicable to any company offering EUAR services (EU Authorised Representative).

For Medical Devices the ‘Date of Application’ was 26 May 2021, meaning that all of the provisions of the new regulation became applicable, even if manufacturers are taking advantage of the extended transition period. These new provisions include, amongst others, the new Vigilance reporting timelines, all Post Market activities and the requirement to have a Person Responsible for Regulatory Compliance (PRRC).

This training course is a two-day, online, interactive course and covers all of the requirements of Article 15 of the MDR and Article 15 of the IVDR.

What you’ll study

You will study the morphology of blood and the human circulatory system and how bloodstains are produced in different circumstances. Following this course you will be able learn how to identify different bloodstain patterns and demonstrate how velocity and angle of impact affects bloodstain patterns.

Tutor profile - Jon Wright

Jon Wright is a course leader and Senior Lecturer in Forensic Science. For 15 years, Jon was a forensic scientist involved in active casework, followed by a further 16 years (ongoing) of teaching forensic science. One of Jon's main areas of expertise over his career has been Bloodstain Pattern Analysis.
