Nottingham Trent University and Humber College students explored themes like crime and community wellness in a six-week COIL experience led by academics and guest speakers from both institutions.

Students from Nottingham Trent University and Humber College, Canada studied together over a six-week extra-curricular Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) experience. Academics from both institutions, Ashley Hosker-Field and Doug Thomson from Humber College with Glenn Williams and Andrea Lyons-Lewis from NTU, along with guest speakers, covered areas themed around crime and community wellness.
Students worked in two teams to develop presentations for the final plenary session. They shared insights into differences and similarities in legal frameworks and the psychological and societal impact of crime in Canada and the United Kingdom. They also discussed their reflections on intercultural communication and studying online across borders.
“The guest speakers were so insightful and the students did an incredible job showcasing the contrasts in policies, procedures and terminology between the UK and Canada,” said Ayesha Amin, Global Learning and Strategic Initiatives Coordinator, project lead for Humber College.
“The COIL programme brought to life international themes in each course. It was great to see the student presenters use the opportunity to explore different approaches to crime reduction,” said Gareth Williams, Associate Dean - Resource and Planning, project lead for NTU.
This COIL project is part of the ongoing strategic partnership between Humber College in Toronto, Canada and Nottingham Trent University. Senior representatives from Humber College took part in the NTU Global hosted Vice-Chancellor’s Global Question Time in February, 2023.
