Summer School FAQ's

Studying abroad is a big decision and choosing to do this can understandably raise a number of questions. We have compiled a list so you can get some instant answers to the most frequent questions.

We get asked a lot of questions about Summer School, here are answers to the most popular.

1. What happens with cancellations?

If you wish to withdraw from your course(s) please email us soon as possible. Requests for a refund will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

The following will be applicable:

If you cancel before 1st April = 90% refund of course and accommodation fee

If you cancel between 1st April and 1st June, you will receive a 50% refund of course and accommodation fee

If you cancel after 1st June – no refund of course or accommodation fee

The following exceptional circumstances will be considered, on a case by case basis, for a full refund – supporting evidence will be requested:

Extenuating personal circumstances (for example, illness which prevents you from travelling, bereavement etc.)

Visa application refusal – however, refunds will not be considered if visas have been applied for too late or are the wrong type.

Covid – Government regulations restrict travel from your country to the UK

Course cancelled by NTU

We need a minimum number of students in order for our courses to run. If there are not enough students, the course will be withdrawn, and you will be able to either choose a different course or receive a full refund of your tuition and accommodation fees.

If, due to Covid, the UK has to lockdown, we will cancel the on-campus summer school and you will receive a full refund of your tuition and accommodation fees.

2. When shall I make travel arrangements?

In order to run, our courses need a minimum number of students. We will confirm this as soon as we can, at least four-weeks before the course start date. We do not advise you to book any flights until you have received this confirmation as any expenses made, other than course and housing fees, will not be reimbursed if a course has to be cancelled.

3. Do I need a visa? When do you send the invitation letter?

Please check with the UK Border Agency regarding visa requirements before you make your booking, as you may require a Short-Term Study Visa. Allow yourself plenty of time to prepare your documents and submit your application. You can apply online for a visa up to three months before your date of travel to the UK and you should get a decision within three weeks. Once you have paid your tuition fee and your course has been confirmed as running, you will receive an invitation letter which you can use to support your visa application.

4. Where will the Summer School take place, when should I arrive and how do I get there?

The Summer School will take place at Nottingham Trent University’s City, Clifton and Brackenhurst Campuses depending on your subject.

Nottingham is very well connected to different ports of arrival, but it is worth planning your journey to NTU ahead of time. The closest airport to NTU is East Midlands Airport, which mainly handles flights to and from Europe. The closest International airports you may fly into are Birmingham and Manchester. Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton and Stansted are all close to London.

Many students prefer to travel by coach or train from these airports to Nottingham. There is lots of useful information on our travelling to Nottingham webpage however, please note that we do not usually arrange airport pick-ups unless you are travelling as a group of 10 or more. You can check in to our accommodation from 5pm on the Saturday, or anytime on the Sunday, before the start of your course.

5. Can I check in if my flight arrives late at night and can I stay longer in the accommodation? 

Yes, our accommodation has a 24-hour reception – but please do let us know in advance so that we can inform our accommodation teams to expect you.

You are expected to leave our on-campus accommodation by mid-day on the day after your summer school course finishes (Saturday). You may be able to stay for one or two nights longer, however, you will need to pay for extra nights’ accommodation and will depend on the availability of rooms. Please contact the Summer School Coordinator as soon as possible if you think you may need to stay longer.

6. What are the eating arrangements in the accommodation?

Our accommodation is self-catering – which means you cook your own food. Kitchens are shared and are equipped with basic utensils. You can buy any utensils you need that are missing from your kitchen at low cost from shops in the city centre – please ask your student buddy! You can buy food from our Students Union shop, which is underneath your accommodation, and just a short walk away are two supermarkets, with specialist food shops within the city centre. There are lots of cafes, fast-food, bars and restaurants in Nottingham.

7. What will the weather be like in July and are there heaters in the rooms?

The weather in the UK can be unpredictable! The average temperature in July is 19 – 20˚C but it can get to around 26-28 ˚C. It can also rain unexpectedly! We recommend bringing light clothes which you can layer, and a raincoat / umbrella!

There are heaters in your rooms but as the weather in Nottingham in July is a nice temperature and so you shouldn’t need to use them!

8. Can I change my course once I have arrived at NTU

If you attend the first session of your course and find your choice unsuitable you may be able to transfer onto an alternative course which runs at the same time if you inform the Summer School Coordinator by 12noon on the first day of the course. This is subject to you meeting any prerequisites for the new course and there being places available on it.

9. What happens if I am late to my first class? 

Students arriving after mid-day on the first day of the course may not be accepted. If there are exceptional circumstances that mean you will be arriving late on your first day please contact the Summer School Coordinator as soon as possible.

10. How is the summer school assessed? How many credits will I receive? 

Most of our Summer School courses are credit bearing. Please check the course description online. On campus course credits range from 10 to 15 UK credits. Online courses each carry 5 UK credits. 10 UK credits are equivalent to 5 ECTS. Upon successful completion of your course you will receive a ‘Certificate of Completion’ to say that you have attended and achieved a level of attainment expected by your tutor, and, in September, after the Board of Examiners have met, you will be emailed a transcript confirming that you’ve passed your course and the number of credits you have achieved.

Each summer school course is assessed differently and may include doing an individual or group presentation, producing and displaying work such as photos, models, clothing and photo books, or writing a report. Students must attend all classes and pass the assessment to be awarded credits.

Yes, all of your classes are compulsory and you will be expected to arrive at your class on time. All students must conduct themselves in an appropriate manner – students who are disruptive may be given a warning and asked to leave the classes. Please ensure your mobile phone is switched off unless you are using it for your class.

Most teaching materials are included in your tuition fee. If you do need to bring anything with you for your course we will let you know in advance.
