The principal role of an external examiner is to confirm the academic standards of NTU’s awards. You will also consider the integrity, rigour and fairness of the University’s assessment processes and contribute to discussion about future developments of the course.
Your role and responsibilities as an external examiner are set out in the University's Quality Handbook, Section 9.
Once your external examiner appointment is approved you will receive a letter of appointment from the Centre of Academic Development and Quality (CADQ) that will include details of the course(s) to which you have been appointed. You will also receive information about your annual fee and expenses from the relevant School contact.
The commencement of your contract with NTU is subject to the successful completion of a Right to Work check, in compliance with our obligations under the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Our Human Resources team will contact you regarding an external examiner worker contract and your proof of eligibility to work in the UK.
In accordance with the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) guidance, the University makes the name, position and institution of appointed external examiners available to students via our Virtual Learning Environment. Students are made aware that it is inappropriate for them to make direct contact with external examiners, but in the event that a student contacts you, we would ask you to forward the correspondence to the University immediately.
