Apply for a Scholarship

If you're a current or incoming NTU student, a music scholarship could give you the boost you need to develop your talent alongside your academic studies.

NTU Music Scholarship

An NTU Music Scholarship provides you with the opportunity to develop your vocal or instrumental skills with one of our expert tutors, alongside your academic studies.

We offer tuition for voice, piano, strings, brass, guitar, bass, percussion, drums, and woodwind.

Our scholarships are of varying lengths. We may award music tuition for a number of months, a full academic year, or up to the length of your course. Successful candidates are expected to join at least one of NTU's ensembles and show full commitment to this and their music tuition.

Who can apply?

You can apply for a scholarship as a current or prospective student.

Current students

You are eligible to apply for a scholarship if:

  • You are enrolled on an NTU undergraduate or postgraduate degree course
  • You are a Grade 6 or 7 standard vocalist; or a Grade 7 or 8 standard instrumentalist

You don't need to have taken and passed exams, but your audition performance should demonstrate that you are singing or playing to this level.

Prospective students

You can apply for one of our music scholarships if you have received or firmly accepted an offer to join an NTU undergraduate or postgraduate degree course starting in September 2023 or January 2024.

You are eligible to apply for a scholarship if:

  • You  have an offer to study on an NTU undergraduate or postgraduate degree course
  • You are a Grade 6 or 7 standard vocalist; or a Grade 7 or 8 standard instrumentalist

You don't need to have taken and passed exams, but your audition performance should demonstrate that you are singing or playing to this level.

How to apply

Current students

We audition current students at the start of each academic year – usually in the first week of term.

Auditions take place at the NTU Music Centre on our City Campus, with Matthew Hopkins, Director of Music.

Prospective students

  1. Video yourself singing or playing two contrasting pieces of music (a maximum of ten minutes combined) and upload these to a video sharing platform like Vimeo or YouTube. You'll need the web addresses handy for your application form.
  2. Complete our Music Scholarship Application Form for offer holders and submit it by the deadline.

The deadline to apply is 11.59 pm on Thursday 8 June 2023.

All applicants will be notified by Friday 16 June 2023, to let them know whether or not they have been shortlisted for a scholarship.

If you are shortlisted, we'll invite you to attend a short online interview with the Director of Music.

All shortlisted students will find out whether or not they have been successful by Friday 23 June 2023.

NTU Accompanist Scholarship

This award is given to just one or two students every year. It lasts one academic year, and features exclusive tuition with the University's accompanist.

If you are are successful you will have the opportunity to play in Chamber Choir and Choir rehearsals, and accompany vocalists and instrumentalists in our free lunchtime concert series.

Can I apply?

You are eligible to apply for a scholarship if:

  • You are enrolled on an NTU undergraduate or postgraduate course.
  • You have studied piano to at least Grade 8 standard.

How do I apply?

We audition current students at the start of each academic year – usually in the first week of term.

NTU Organ Scholarship

This award is given to just one student each year. It lasts one academic year and offers the recipient private tuition with NTU's organ tutor.

If you are successful, you will have the opportunity to play at the University's graduation ceremonies and annual Carol Service.

Can I apply?

You are eligible to apply for a scholarship if:

  • You are enrolled on an NTU undergraduate or postgraduate course.
  • You are Grade 8 standard or above on the piano and / or organ.

How do I apply?
