Chiara Sharp

Lecturer

School of Social Sciences

Staff Group(s)
Nursing and Paramedicine/IHAP

Role

Chiara Sharp is a Lecturer in Paramedic Science within the School of Social Sciences, teaching across the BSc (Hons), Degree Apprenticeship, and MSc Paramedic programmes. Her teaching focuses on pharmacology, clinical decision-making, and applied patient assessment, and she leads the Pharmacology in Practice module. She also contributes to simulation-based education, OSCE development, and practical skills delivery, including trauma management, advanced life support, and case-based workshops.

Alongside her teaching responsibilities, Chiara acts as an academic mentor, supervises undergraduate and postgraduate dissertation projects, and supports apprentice progress reviews. Her pedagogical interests include experiential learning, assessment for learning, and enhancing clinical reasoning through simulation.

Chiara’s current research interests centre on pharmacological interventions in paramedic practice and patient decision-making in acute care, with recent work published in the Journal of Paramedic Practice. She also contributes to course development, admissions, open days, and broader programme quality and enhancement activities within the department.

Career overview

Before joining Nottingham Trent University, Chiara worked clinically as a registered paramedic for five years, gaining extensive frontline experience across a range of emergency and urgent care settings. She later moved into an Urgent Treatment Centre role for four and a half years, where she developed advanced assessment skills, managed minor illness and injury presentations, and qualified as a non-medical prescriber. Alongside this, she supported student paramedics in practice, which initiated her interest in education.

Chiara began her academic career at NTU in 2024 as a Lecturer in Paramedic Science, teaching across the BSc, apprenticeship, and MSc programmes. Since joining the department, she has led sessions in pharmacology, clinical skills, major trauma, paediatrics, and simulation-based learning. She is currently completing her Level 7 Academic Professional Apprenticeship, further developing her pedagogical practice, and has contributed to assessment design, OSCE development, and module leadership. She also supervises undergraduate and postgraduate research projects and has co-authored research published in the Journal of Paramedic Practice.

Research areas

Chiara's research focuses on pharmacological interventions in pre-hospital care, paramedic clinical decision-making, and patient pathways in emergency and urgent care. She co-authored a study on pharmacology in acute coronary syndrome published in the Journal of Paramedic Practice and supervises dissertation projects exploring topics such as bleed control kits, mass-casualty response, paediatric fever presentations, and ambulance service utilisation. Broadly, her work examines how evidence-based pharmacology, patient behaviour, and system pressures influence outcomes in the pre-hospital environment.

External activity

Alongside her academic role, Chiara continues to work bank shifts in an Urgent Treatment Centre, maintaining up-to-date clinical skills in minor illness, minor injury, and urgent care assessment. This ongoing practice ensures her teaching remains closely aligned with contemporary clinical standards, prescribing practice, and real-world patient presentations. Her continued clinical engagement also supports strong professional links with local healthcare providers, enabling her to bring current case examples, service developments, and clinical insights directly into her teaching, simulation design, and research supervision.
