Volunteering opportunities in our law firm

Our fully regulated, multi-award-winning teaching law firm NLS Legal offers our law students the opportunity to gain real-life work experience in a supportive and inclusive environment.

Hundreds of Nottingham Law School students volunteer every year. Growing in confidence, our teaching law firm helps them gain key professional skills that are highly valued by employers.

Our students give back to the community by providing access to justice for those unable to afford or otherwise access legal services.

How can I get involved?

Examples of what our students can get involved with include:

  • various service areas including business, civil litigation, criminal, employment, family, housing, intellectual property, SEND, welfare benefits
  • administrative and risk and compliance placements
  • case analysis, research, client interviewing and drafting
  • tribunal representation/advocacy
  • Public Legal Education seminars and webinars
  • Outreach Advice Services
  • collaborations with other organisations
  • student committees.

Students can get involved as part of a course, module or an extra-curricular basis.

We offer a mix of in-person and online opportunities.

Why volunteer?

Volunteering at NLS Legal provides a unique opportunity to gain practical work experience in a working law firm while you complete your studies. It all takes place under the supervision of qualified and experienced lawyers.

You will be supporting access to justice because our services are for those who cannot afford or otherwise access legal advice. Our students have told us that volunteering with NLS Legal has helped them to develop key skills in drafting, research, time management, teamwork, communication, confidence, resilience, client interviewing and advocacy skills.

Year after year, we are delighted to see that students undertaking live client activity with NLS Legal outperform their peers.
