Students working together at a desk

Our innovative approach to legal education means you won't be limited to learning during seminars and lectures. Working with industry leaders, all of our undergraduate courses offer a minimum of eight weeks (240 hours) of 'assessed work-like experience' (AWLE) to ensure you build up experience typical to that of a legal professional.

Integrating this practical activity directly into our curriculum and assessments takes the burden off of you, allowing you to focus on honing your skills and confidence. For those hungry for more, this is in addition to the option to undertake a placement as part of your course and the many intra-curricular volunteering opportunities with NLS Legal and Support Through Court.

How does this work in practice?

To offer a flavour of how this real-world experience is woven into your studies, the below is an example of how this is achieved on LLB Law full-time:

Year one

  • Legal and Professional Environment - Professional Development Plan, LinkedIn and CV production
  • Contract - entry-level moot, with guidance provided by a practising barrister
  • IEC with Group Presentation Skills - opportunities to practise professional presentations in a supportive environment (again with tips from an employer)

Year two

  • The NLS Employer Challenge - working in groups on a realistic project brief designed by an employer and presenting back findings/recommendations.
  • Land Law and Professional Advice - practise populating document templates used by trainee solicitors and draft a simulated memo to a partner
  • Criminal Law with Mooting - a mooting exercise, requiring the submission of a skeleton argument (a short summary of issues addressed)

Year three

One of:

  • Law in Practice - 35-hour placement
  • Applied Legal Knowledge (NLS Legal) Criminal and Business Practice - workshops designed and facilitated by NLS Legal solicitors
  • Path to Professional Practice - workshops designed and facilitated by professionals from a variety of sectors

The benefits

By fully engaging in work-like experience, you can build a wide variety of practical skills that you can evidence when seeking employment or further study upon completion of your course:

  • Client focus
  • Collaboration
  • Effective communication
  • Problem solving
  • Ethical conduct
  • Commercial awareness
  • Attention to detail
  • Critical self-reflection
