Emrys Green - Level 7 Senior Leader Degree Apprenticeship

Why did you choose to do the Senior Leader apprenticeship?

"To develop my knowledge of the issues larger businesses face, and challenge myself to apply learning to my own company."

What stands out about NBS and NTU?

"The personalisation of learning programmes, networks and additional CPD opportunities presented for students to benefit from outside of their programme. This strong connection to industry keeps things relevant and thinking contemporary."

How do you believe this apprenticeship will affect both your current job role and future career?

"I have been able to apply the learning, from lectures, my research and from our group work, to my organisation and my clients. I believe achieving the degree and apprenticeship helps signal my commitment to development and new knowledge we can bring to our clients. It has already given me the confidence and knowledge to expand the company, achieve our greatest ever profits and develop new areas of work.

Through encouragement of the lecturers, I also joined the boards of two larger charities. One of which is the global leadership body, The Institute of Leadership & Management, where I am now the Chair. This opportunity would not have been within reach before my apprenticeship and is an achievement I’m already incredibly proud of."

How have you balanced studying alongside your professional role? How have you found the support from your employer?

"Finding the balance between work and study has occasionally been tricky – with competing priorities. However, starting early on research, setting personal deadlines, and mapping out assignments for a clear understanding of what’s needed from the start really helps.

I’ve been fortunate to have support from my colleagues and clients; and ensuring assignments are based on real business issues, relevant to my work, helps with that buy-in and commitment because the output is useful rather than just ‘academic’."

What advice would you give to someone applying or looking to study the Senior Leader apprenticeship?

"Don’t be afraid of thinking ‘how will I do it all?’ – having completed my first degree whilst working full-time and now my MBA too; it is very much possible. There will be some sacrifices to make (use of holiday time, not socialising as much as you’d like near a deadline) but these are short lived and the opportunity to learn and apply this in real life situations is incredibly useful for accelerating your development."

If you could describe your apprenticeship in 5 words, what would they be?

"An opportunity to challenge yourself!"
