Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship?

"Before starting my apprenticeship I was already working for my employers and knew that I wanted progress my career with them.

I was working as a paralegal which led to my aspirations of wanting to qualify as a solicitor, but I didn’t want to sacrifice my job in order to go to university full-time.  An apprenticeship was the perfect way to continue to gain practical on the job experience alongside studying, whilst continuing to earn money."

What stands out about Nottingham Trent University?

"The reputation of NTU speaks for itself and has fully lived up to my expectations. The quality of the teaching, facilities and collaboration between the university and my employer has helped to ensure that I achieve the best that I possibly can during the apprenticeship."

How do you believe this apprenticeship will affect both your current job role and future career?

"The apprenticeship has given me an opportunity to build on my current practical knowledge from working as a paralegal and learn about the academic side of law. Being able to combine the two will enable me to progress from my current role and qualify as a solicitor and Crown Prosecutor. That in turn will open up even more opportunities to me to progress in the future."

The quality of the teaching, facilities and collaboration between the university and my employer has helped to ensure that I achieve the best that I possibly can during the apprenticeship.

What do you think of the facilities available at NTU?

"Before starting my apprenticeship, I was worried that a majority of the teaching for the course is online. However, the online platforms used for the apprenticeship are intuitive and engaging. They are full of how to guides and detailed lectures in each area of study. Everything is easy to use, including access to an extensive online library where I have always been able to find everything that I need to supplement my learning."

What skills and experience have you gained as part of this apprenticeship? Has there been anything that you were not expecting?

"I’ve gained invaluable skills as part of the apprenticeship both from the university and opening up training opportunities at work that I would not have otherwise been afforded. Beyond the research and written communication skills from the course, I have been able to obtain a qualification through work which has given me rights of audience in the Magistrates’ Court to gain advocacy experience – this is an opportunity I would never have accessed without completing the apprenticeship.

It also allows me the opportunity to go away on secondment to experience different areas of law and hopefully learn transferable skills that can complement both my learning at university and my full-time job when I return."
