Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship?

I wanted to pursue an apprenticeship because it offers a unique blend of hands-on experience and structured learning. It allows me to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings, develop practical skills, and gain insights from experienced professionals. This approach not only enhances my expertise but also prepares me for future career opportunities in a way that traditional education alone may not.

Why did you choose to study at NTU?

I chose to study civil engineering at Nottingham Trent University because of its strong focus on practical application and industry relevance. The program offers excellent facilities and opportunities for hands-on experience, which are crucial in engineering. Additionally, NTU’s connections with local firms and its commitment to sustainable practices align with my career aspirations. The university’s supportive environment and strong academic reputation further solidified my decision.

I believe this apprenticeship will significantly enhance my skills and knowledge as a civil engineer. What do you think of the facilities available at NTU? This includes online resources.

The facilities at Nottingham Trent University are generally considered excellent. The engineering labs and workshops are well-equipped with modern technology, which supports hands-on learning effectively. As for the online NOW resources, they are highly rated for their accessibility and comprehensive content. The platform provides a range of learning materials, including lecture notes, videos, and interactive tools, making it easier for students to engage with the curriculum. Overall, both the physical and online resources contribute significantly to a positive learning experience.

How have you balanced studying alongside your professional role and how have you found the support from your employer?

Balancing study and work in the civil engineering degree apprenticeship has been challenging but rewarding. It requires effective time management and prioritisation to meet both academic and professional responsibilities. The practical experience gained from RPS complements my studies, making the learning more relevant and applicable. While it can be demanding, the support from RPS and the university has helped me navigate this balance successfully. Overall, this experience has enhanced my organizational skills and reinforced my commitment to my career goals.

What is your favourite thing about your apprenticeship?

My favourite thing about working at RPS in civil engineering is the collaborative environment where I can engage with a diverse team of experts on impactful projects. The opportunity to contribute to real-world solutions and see the direct effects of our work in the community is incredibly rewarding. Additionally, the supportive culture encourages continuous learning and professional development, allowing me to grow both technically and personally in my role.

What skills and experience have you gained as part of this apprenticeship? Has there been anything that you were not expecting?

From the apprenticeship I have gained a lot of valuable experience from site visits to client events, understanding how the world of civil engineering works and been able to experience different working environments. Leadership, team building and independent working are all valuable skills I have learnt at RPS and Nottingham Trent University.
