About the facility
Pods (A-D)
We have four interconnected laboratories (Pods) that are designed to accommodate up to 72 final year bachelor's and master's students who are conducting independent research projects.
Equipment
Each student in the pod is allocated their own fume hood and laboratory bench space where they can work closely with an academic to perform research in various areas of chemistry, including organic, inorganic, analytical, and physical chemistry. All the necessary equipment and resources are provided, including vacuum and nitrogen lines, as well as the expected glassware. The Pods are equipped with a range of instruments, such as a dynamic light scattering instrument (DLS), Three UV spectrophotometers (including one with solid capability), six rotary evaporators, Fourier Transform Infra-red Spectroscopy (FTIR), an optical microscope, orbital shakers, a vacuum oven, various other ovens, and a freeze dryer.
In addition to traditional columns, there is also an automated Flash Chromatography instrument available for use. The labs are equipped with devices for centrifugation, pH and conductivity measurements, surface tension analysis, refractive index measurements, and a drop-shape analyser. These resources enable students to conduct comprehensive research and analysis in their chosen areas of study within the field of chemistry.
