Our Crime Scene Training Facility is the perfect place to develop those all important practical Forensic Science skills.

Empowering practical expertise in Forensic Science

Take a video tour of our Forensic Science facilities.

Our Forensic Science course prioritize the development of practical skills, which is a key aspect of your studies. To support our comprehensive approach to forensic analysis, NTU have carefully designed facilities that facilitate a smooth transition from crime scene to court. Our dedicated crime scene facility recreates a variety of scenarios, including burglaries, assaults, and intricate drug searches.

Our experienced team trains students to assume the role of crime scene examiners and enhances their proficiency in investigation, evidence collection, and analysis techniques. To provide a well-rounded forensic investigation experience, you will have access to seven purpose-built rooms and a spacious external area.

These rooms include a briefing suite, a CCTV room, and a specialized laboratory for blood pattern analysis. With advanced equipment and resources, our laboratories create an optimal learning setting for students to delve into the intricacies of evidence processing. Our goal is to empower our students to become skilled forensic professionals who are fully prepared to tackle real-world challenges with confidence and expertise.

Other specialist forensic equipment and facilities at NTU

Within this dedicated laboratory, you will have access to equipment and tools used for analysing various types of documents. Here, you learn the techniques to examine handwriting, ink analysis, paper composition, and other elements crucial for document authenticity and forgery detection.

Serves as a dynamic learning environment for students interested in firearms and related evidence analysis. In this facility, students study the behaviour and characteristics of firearms, ammunition, and gunshot residue. Learn how to examine bullet trajectories, analyse firearm markings, and use specialized tools to match fired bullets and casings to specific firearms. This hands-on experience provides our students with a comprehensive understanding of firearms-related evidence and its significance in forensic investigations.

In an era where digital evidence plays a significant role in forensic investigations, our facilities are equipped with advanced technology for capturing and analysing fingerprints. You will learn how to use specialized digital fingerprint capture devices to obtain high-resolution fingerprint images from various surfaces. Additionally, you will be trained in the application of specialist lighting techniques to enhance the visibility and detection of latent fingerprints. These skills enable students to effectively process and analyse fingerprint evidence, a cornerstone of forensic identification.

Have access to cutting-edge equipment and techniques used in the analysis of DNA evidence. With an access to biosciences labs, you will learn how to extract DNA from different sources, perform polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and conduct DNA sequencing using advanced instruments. Through hands-on experiments on the course, you will gain proficiency in analysing DNA profiles, interpreting results, and understanding the significance of DNA evidence in criminal investigations.

Virtual experience and training professionals

In order to enhance our educational offerings and provide students with a comprehensive learning experience, we are actively working on creating a range of online, virtual crime scene training packages. These resources are designed to complement our existing facilities and provide students with an immersive and innovative learning environment where they can develop their skills and knowledge in the field of forensic science.

We take great pride in our commitment to practical expertise, and this dedication has earned us recognition from prestigious organizations such as Nottinghamshire Police and Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC). These esteemed entities have chosen to utilize our state-of-the-art facilities to develop their own forensic training programs, which serves as a testament to the quality and effectiveness of our resources.
