More about Tom
Why did you choose to study at NTU?
NTU offered the perfect combination of a really interesting course and an incredible reputation for student lifestyle.
What did you learn – both inside and outside of lectures?
In lectures I learnt so much about working in the zoological industry, I equally learnt about the fundamentals of scientific practice which I have found to be extremely transferable. Outside of lectures I learnt a lot of valuable life lessons such as how to cook on a budget and how not to spend my money!
What have you been up to since graduating?
Since graduating I have taken part in work placements, worked at multiple zoos, I currently work for Natural England as a Farm Environment Lead Advisor and am studying a part-time MSc.
What does your current day involve?
My current day involves working with landowners along the river Wye to try to achieve a healthier environment with clean air, water and thriving biodiversity. I achieve this through guiding farmers through agri-environment schemes and advising on best practices. In the evening I am currently working on my dissertation for an MSc in Applied Ecology.
What attracted you to this field?
I wanted to make a positive impact in our native ecosystems.
What have been the highlights and biggest challenges of your career so far?
The highlights in my career have been through my time working within the zoo industry. My involvement in captive breeding of a variety of endangered animals has to be highlight. I have worked with animals such as gorillas, African penguin and bald eagles which has also been incredible.
What are your plans for the future?
I’m hoping to finish my MSc and potentially move onto a PhD with a view to becoming a lecturer.
If you had a time machine, what would you go back and tell yourself at NTU?
Get involved in more of the stuff the university had to offer!
Finally, is there anything else you’d like to share with our student and alumni community?
It not about the destination it’s about the journey; NTU offers an incredible opportunity to get your journey going.
