From dollhouses to digital architecture...Camelia's journey.

What inspired you to study MSc Digital Architecture and Construction at NTU?

While many children played with dollhouses, I preferred building my own from cardboard, which sparked my early interest in design. As I progressed into architecture, I became fascinated by how it exists almost everywhere, yet relies on collaboration across disciplines to truly function. I began my studies with the ambition to make a positive impact through design, and while that goal remains, I've also developed a deeper appreciation for the complexity of the field. This has motivated me to continue expanding my knowledge through a Master’s in Digital Architecture and Construction.

Why did you choose NTU?

I chose NTU because of its strong reputation for academic excellence and the career prospects of its graduates. I was particularly drawn to the supportive learning environment and the opportunity to develop both my research and practical skills.

MSc Digital Architecture and Construction stood out to me because of its integration of design, technology, and construction. I am especially interested in the focus on digital design studio, computational design, and BIM, which offer hands-on experience with relevant tools. The course’s emphasis on real-world application and research aligns with my goal of using digital methods to create more efficient and innovative architectural solutions.

What has been your experience of the course so far?

My experience on the course so far has been very positive. It’s both engaging and intellectually stimulating, and the learning environment feels supportive and collaborative. Working closely with my peers has been a key part of the experience, allowing us to share ideas and learn from one another.

One of the highlights for me has been the level of support from the professors. They are always approachable and provide clear guidance, which has made a real difference in my learning. Beyond academics, we also organise social activities with classmates and staff, which helps us manage the workload and build strong connections within the course.

Have you taken part in any extracurricular activities that have enhanced your NTU experience?

Yes, I’ve had the opportunity to take part in several activities that have complemented my studies. At the beginning of the year, I was involved in the Vertical Studio Project (VSP), where I collaborated with Architectural Technology students from different year groups. This was a great introduction to the university, helping me connect with others and gain new perspectives.

I have also attended Trent Talks and events such as the Design Exchange, which have been very valuable in connecting with industry professionals and understanding current trends in the field. These experiences have really enhanced my learning beyond the classroom.

How have you found studying in the UK?

Studying in the UK is a strategic step for me to broaden my perspective and further specialise in my field. The UK is a global leader in architectural innovation, with influential figures such as Norman Foster, Zaha Hadid, and Richard Rogers shaping contemporary design.

Its rich architectural landscape, from historic landmarks to sustainable developments, creates an inspiring environment for learning.

As an international student at NTU, I’ve had a very enriching experience. I’ve met people from a wide range of cultures, which has allowed me to build meaningful friendships and broaden my perspective.

NTU also offers a variety of cultural events, which have been a great opportunity to learn more about different traditions and feel part of a diverse and welcoming community.

How is NTU supporting your career goals?

NTU is helping me build the skills and confidence needed to transition into the industry. The course is equipping me with both technical knowledge and practical experience that are directly relevant to my career goals in digital architecture and construction.

In addition, the employability team has been very supportive in helping me refine my CV and cover letters, as well as preparing for interviews. This made me feel more prepared and confident about entering the professional world.

Do you have any advice for someone thinking of studying your course at NTU?

My top tip would be not to be afraid to reach out and ask questions. The course leaders are very supportive and always happy to help with any uncertainties before and during the course.

It’s also important to stay organised and manage your time well, as this will help you balance your studies with your social life. Finally, make the most of the experience, engage fully with each module, stay curious, and don’t hesitate to ask questions to deepen your understanding.
