More about Lana

Lana graduated from our BA (Hons) Fashion Management course in 2016, and has secured a role as a global marketing assistant at Karen Millen, London. Here Lana talks about her University highlights, undertaking a placement at River Island and how the course has prepared her for a career in fashion.

What made you choose to study Fashion Management a NTU?
“I knew I wanted to pursue a creative course at university, however before starting my research I wasn’t sure which course. I didn’t realise there was such a diverse and niche choice of fashion courses out there! After discovering Fashion Management, I was immediately drawn to the course – the creative and business elements of the course, alongside the established industry links was a no brainer for me.

“Whilst I love drawing and using illustrator, I really benefitted from the academic side of the course and I’ve found the business modules have really helped me in my career. Attending an open day cemented my choice – the tutors were fantastic and the talks from current students really portrayed the importance of completing a year-long industry placement.”

What was your University highlight?
“At a course level, I’d definitely say my placement year was the highlight. Having the opportunity to experience the workplace and the job role I was planning to undertake for my future career was so important.

“I completed my placement at River Island as the Offline Marketing Assistant and spent a year working at the head office in West London. At first I was shocked by the amount of responsibility I was given, but I worked alongside a great team who supported me so much throughout the year.

“I developed vital vocational skills, such as email etiquette, building relationships with key suppliers and got used to working 9 – 5, and a lot of overtime!

“The support we received from the tutors throughout the course was indispensable, from writing our CVs and going to assessment centres to learning everything there is to know about merino wool. Fashion Management really does cover so many touch points of the industry that it allows students to get a real understanding of each role before deciding upon a career path.”

Why would you recommend your course to someone thinking of pursuing a career in Fashion?
“Having such amazing relationships with industry makes securing a placement with so many fantastic companies so much easier – and this is definitely the best thing about Fashion Management at NTU."

Can you tell us a little bit about your current role?
“I currently work as the Global Marketing Assistant at Karen Millen based in East London.

“I love the diversity of my role - I work with markets around the world, from Hong Kong to Kuwait, which has definitely helped develop my communication skills. As a global business I work very closely with our marketing teams internationally, particularly helping to support our European, American and Australian marketing teams -  supplying assets and artwork.

“Each day at work is different, I could be supplying magazine ads, creating brand relationships with key partners or helping to source and create marketing gifts.”

How did studying Fashion Management at NTU help get you were you are today?
“Without a doubt I wouldn’t be where I am today if I hadn’t studied Fashion Management at NTU – the support from tutors and diversity of the course opened up so many door into the industry.

“There’s such a strong community within the course, and I’m still best friends with my course friends – it appears NTU Fashion Management graduates have taken over most of the UK retailers! The tutors and academics have really prepared me for my career, and I think most importantly gave me confidence in my own ability.”
