I love studying here because my tutor inspires me to create my own style. I understand my thoughts better, and figured out what I love to do.

More about Tan

Tan was announced a finalist in the third annual LensCulture Street Photography Awards 2017.

Can you tell us about your Masters project?
“We all have to walk through the shadow in order to find the light. This is my concept that I wanted to illustrate in my series ‘Stage of Light’, presenting it as a runway in life. If people are faced with an unfortunate situation, they can look back on what they have gone through. I developed my ideas over time by sharing my thoughts with my tutors and classmates. They played a vital role in my improvement during my course at NTU.”

What do you enjoy most about your course at NTU?
“When I first started my course, I felt panic every time I had to attend a class because of my limited English ability. However, after every class, I knew that I could develop my English and improve my photography skills. I gained a lot of ideas and suggestions from my classmates and tutors.”

What made you choose to study at NTU?
“NTU has very good art and design courses, as well as excellent facilities for art and design students. Personally, I wanted to study in a major city in the UK, not including London as it is too crowded for me. Nottingham offered a great city life. It has its own story, uniqueness and style, not to mention the shops, restaurants and options for commuting in the city. Hence, I believe NTU was the best fit for my needs.”

How do you find the course staff?
“They are very nice. When I first came, I had to adapt a lot. They gave me suggestions and patiently advised me in many ways.”

What do you think about the facilities available to you?
“I love the printing room very much. Before I came to NTU, I did not have the opportunity to use a good printer, and did not know how to print on good quality paper with minimal wastage. I have now learnt printing techniques, and can print a fine quality image myself.”

As an international student, what do you like about studying and living in Nottingham?
“I love studying here because my tutor inspires me to create my own style. I understand my thoughts better, and figured out what I love to do. Living in Nottingham is easy. It has almost everything that London can offer. In addition, Nottingham is a perfect match for my photography style. I love living and studying here.”

Why would you recommend your course / NTU to someone looking to study MA Photography?
“I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in photography as I believe they will gain a lot more than they expect. It is not only photography skills, but also photography ideas. Before I came to NTU, I was just a man who liked photography. When I arrived, I was inspired with countless ideas. My teachers and classmates gave me many useful suggestions that enriched my thoughts, and I adapted it to my photography.”

How do you think the course, and having a postgraduate qualification, will help you to progress your career?
“I believe that with this qualification, it will make my CV stand out. It will help open doors for me to my ideal job and career.”

How was your experience of your Pre-Sessional English for Academic Purposes (PEAP) course?
“For me, the PEAP course helped me with my everyday English. It included an English for business session, where we learnt how to write an academic essay and deliver a presentation. Nevertheless, because it is a general course for students from every course, I found it hard for me to understand technical terms about photography that my classmates used.”
