Why NTU…
Why did you decide to do postgraduate study?
I chose to pursue postgraduate study because my undergraduate degree in Media Studies in Zimbabwe gave me a strong foundation in media theory and practice, but I felt the need to deepen my understanding of how global media systems operate. After some years practising as a journalist, I wanted to broaden my knowledge in communications at a global scale and beyond news making. I saw a postgraduate degree as a springboard to PhD and an expert in the field of communications, ethics in global conflict and peace. This motivated me to advance my academic knowledge so I could critically engage with these dynamics at a higher level.
Why did you choose your course and NTU?
Studying Global Media and Communications at Nottingham Trent University allowed me to broaden my perspective, gain exposure to diverse theoretical frameworks, and situate African media issues within global debates on power, ethics, and representation. Postgraduate study was also a strategic step toward my long-term goals in journalism, research, and work in communications field, where I aim to contribute to more ethical, decolonial, and nuanced reporting, particularly on conflicts, governance, and peace issues in the Global South.
I was also drawn to NTU because of its strong reputation for research and its commitment to inclusivity and diverse perspectives. The faculty’s expertise in areas like global media, ethics, and cultural representation resonated strongly with my own interests in decolonising journalism and conflict/peace journalism.
NTU’s practical, industry-centred approach was another factor. I wanted a university where I could merge academic training with hands-on projects, documentary work, and storytelling.

The diverse student community has also enriched my experience, working with people from different cultural and professional backgrounds has expanded my worldview and sharpened my communication skills.
Have you been involved in any projects, extra-curricular activities or working experience that have supplemented your studies run through NTU?
Yes. During my time at NTU, I took part in several activities and projects that complemented my academic learning and helped me apply my skills in real-world contexts. I was involved in collaborative coursework projects that required research, content creation, and analysis of global media trends, which strengthened my teamwork and communication abilities.
I also engaged in extra-curricular activities, such as attending media-related workshops, guest lectures, and networking events organised by the university. These sessions exposed me to industry professionals and allowed me to build a clearer understanding of the current media landscape. I travelled a lot between NTU and the University of Nottingham for networking events. I also participated in the Digital Marketing Academy course and got hands-on training at Tank, a public relations agency in Nottingham.
In addition, I gained practical experience through part-time opportunities, where I applied the knowledge from my course to real communication tasks, such as the coverage of the 2nd NTU-Africa Symposium, where I filmed and produced a documentary for the NTU Africa Centre Office. I was also involved in the 2025 Sandford St. Martin Awards as a shortlister in the judging process.

As an international student...
Why did you want to study in the UK?
I chose to study in the UK because of its strong global reputation for high-quality education, especially in the field of media and communications. UK universities are known for their academic rigour, diverse perspectives, and emphasis on critical thinking, all of which were important for my postgraduate development.
I was also drawn to the UK’s multicultural environment. Studying in such an international setting allowed me to meet people from around the world, broaden my worldview, and understand global issues from multiple perspectives.
This cultural exposure is especially valuable in a field like media, where global contexts play a major role. I wanted an environment where I could grow both academically and personally, and the UK provided the perfect setting for that.
Is NTU a good place for international students to study?
Yes, NTU is an excellent place for international students. One of the things that stands out is how welcoming and supportive the university is from the very beginning. NTU offers a strong network of support services specifically designed for international students, including guidance with visas, accommodation, academic skills, and settling into life in the UK. This makes the transition much smoother and helps you feel part of the community quickly.
I first met the team from NTU in my country, and everything started flowing. Once one registers their interest to study at NTU, the university invests in prospective students to see them successfully arrive in the UK without hassle and enrol upon arrival. It was smooth. The university even paid for my transport with all my luggage from Heathrow airport to Nottingham.
The campus is very diverse, with students from many different countries and cultural backgrounds. This creates an inclusive atmosphere where it’s easy to make friends, share experiences, and learn from perspectives that are different from your own. There are also plenty of opportunities to get involved in activities, societies, and events, which enhance both the academic and social experience through the NTU Global Lounge.
What advice would you give to help new international students get settled in at university?
My biggest advice for new international students is to be open and proactive during your first few weeks. Moving to a new country can feel overwhelming, but taking small steps makes a huge difference. One must attend welcome events, orientation sessions, and join societies that interest them. It’s one of the easiest ways to meet people and build a support network.
NTU offers help with academic skills, wellbeing, careers, and international student support. Students must not hesitate to ask questions or seek guidance, these services are designed to help them succeed. Also, what I find helpful is familiarising yourself with your new surroundings helps you feel more at home. It’s advisable to find the local shops, transport routes, and places where you can relax or study. Students must keep track of important documents, deadlines, and university emails. Being organised helps reduce stress, especially when you’re adjusting to a new system. It’s normal to experience culture shock or homesickness. Just give yourself time to adjust, and remember that many other students are going through the same thing.
