More about Vicky
Vicky Onishchenko is a second-year BA (Hons) Film & TV and History student from Ukraine. Vicky talks to us about why she chose her course, the support she has received whilst at NTU, and why she enjoys Nottingham as a student city.
What were the key features that attracted you to your course and NTU?
When I was applying to universities, no one had a suitable course for me, but NTU did. I wanted to combine my two favourite subjects and study them equally, as I still could not decide what I wanted to do in the future. NTU gave me the opportunity to try both History and Film and TV. Another thing that attracted me to NTU was the variety of assessments, where students are given the opportunity to prove their knowledge in different ways.
Is there anything about your course that stood out to you, perhaps that wasn’t offered anywhere else you applied?
Yes, I could not decide what I wanted to do in the future, so I wanted to study History and Film together. However, this combination was not offered anywhere else. When I looked at the NTU page, I was so happy and surprised — two very different subjects together, as a course, it looked perfect for me.
What would you describe as the real strengths of your course?
My course is unique and allows me to use my creativity and logical skills at the same time. It is practical and informative, so you gain knowledge and apply it directly to your subject. The staff are amazing: very supportive and happy to help. In my first year as a non-native English speaker, I experienced anxiety about speaking in classes. My teachers were very supportive and helped me overcome this fear and engage in classes. The modules are very interesting, and the lecturers are passionate about their topics and share their enthusiasm with the group.
What topics / projects have you really felt engaged with?
In my second year, we have to do a research project for the History module, and so far, I am really enjoying it. The students can choose the area of History that they are interested in and conduct deeper research about it, like a proper historian. The staff provides a lot of support, so the students do not get stressed and enjoy the process.
What has been your greatest achievement as a Nottingham Trent University student?
My greatest achievement as a Nottingham Trent University student is my personal growth – I proved to myself that I can do it, and I can do it well. I am looking to my future with no fear, as I know what I want to do, who I want to be, and what I have to do to achieve that goal.
In a nutshell, why would you recommend your course / NTU to prospective students?
NTU gives young people an amazing student experience, where you are introduced to higher education without pressure, and you can find like-minded people and have a great time even outside university. You will always have the support you need. If there is any advice or help that you need, the staff are always happy to help.
What three words would you use to describe Nottingham?
Alive, student-orientated, and comfortable.
How have you found Nottingham as a student city?
I lived in Nottingham before I became a student, and I was always amazed by how lively this city is. There is always something on—a festival, market, or concert—and you have a variety of things to do with your friends. Besides this, Nottingham is also a very beautiful city with its own culture and vibe.
Did you find it easy to make friends at NTU?
Yes, I did. NTU has a variety of societies that you can join, depending on your interests. They are always planning interesting events for their members and spending time together. It is a great way to find like-minded people. Also, in our seminars and lectures, we get to share our ideas with each other, making us closer as a group.
What do you think of the support available at NTU?
NTU has the best support team; they are always happy to help and give advice. I know students who came to study at NTU from Ukraine, and they have received support from the team, such as therapy sessions. Their feedback on this was positive; the therapy helped them cope with existing trauma and move on. I have also received various support for my dyslexia, with which I struggle. NTU provided me with advice and tools for studying well and easily with dyslexia.
What’s next for you after NTU?
My course has helped me decide what I actually want to do in the future. I enjoy being a student, so I would love to remain a student a little longer and engage in broader learning about the topics that interest me. Therefore, I am planning to pursue a Master’s degree. After that, I will consider my future as an academic, where I will need to write a PhD, and who knows, maybe I will get an opportunity to do that at NTU.
Has the Employability team helped you with your career plans?
The employability team was incredibly supportive during my placement journey! They took the time to review my CV and cover letter, offering guidance that really helped me refine my materials. Thanks to their advice, I was able to correct any mistakes and successfully secure my placement.
Choosing just one subject to study at university can be a challenge! If you’re stuck weighing up different subjects, a Joint Honours course could be the ideal solution!
