More about Florian

Florian Javaud is a 21 year old BA (Hons) International Business with French student.

Tell us a bit about yourself

I'm Florian and I am a final year student on the International Business with French dual award course. I come from Buckinghamshire and took Maths, Economics and French at A-Level. I enjoy taking part in all kinds of sports and like to travel in my spare time. My academic journey begun during COVID-19 meaning lectures were online, but despite this, NTU provided me with support to help embrace this international experience I would soon be facing.

I have now recently returned to Nottingham after spending two amazing years studying and working in Paris and Marseille. Initially I was hesitant about living in a foreign country independently for the first time, but by the end of it, I didn’t want to leave!

What has stood out about NTU and Nottingham Business School?

Nottingham Business School (NBS) stood out to me due to the number of opportunities it provides. The first obvious one being the two-year experience taking place in France. Also in my final year, NBS have organised a variety of networking events, and provided me with guidance on future career paths post-graduation. There are also many societies for students to get involved in, along with opportunities to work and support the university during open days and more, to develop personal and professional skills, all of which will increase my employability.

I was given the choice between four different routes and I decided to go down the finance path. This helped me grasp a deeper understanding of finance, which helped me during my internship in Paris as a financial assistant.

How would you rate the course facilities and why?

NTU stands out for its excellent facilities which enhance an effective learning experience. The modern and spacious facilities located in the heart of the city foster academic development and create a vibrant student life. The library provides a motivating environment for students to focus and study, along with support staff if in need of technical assistance. There are also many online resources offered for each module, which helped me gain a deeper understanding of my subject.

Did your course include any speakers or lecturers from industry?

Throughout my degree, particularly in my final year, there have been external speakers coming in to share their professional knowledge and experience. This has been very insightful to discover about different industries and has provided valuable guidance when considering my own future career path.

What is your favourite thing about your course?

Studying on this course has been an incredibly rewarding experience. I had always wanted to study abroad, therefore the highlight of this course was having the opportunity to study and work overseas not just for one, but two years! Immersing myself in a new culture, posed challenges to me which I overcame by engaging in associations, such as being a member of ‘Interact’ which aims to integrate international students into the Marseille culture and projects including drumming in competitions across France. From this experience, I gained a global perspective on contemporary business issues too.

Have you had the option to personalise your course and experience at Nottingham Business School? How has this benefitted your studies?

Embarking on my academic journey at KEDGE Business School in Marseille, I was given the choice between four different routes and I decided to go down the finance path. This helped me grasp a deeper understanding of finance, which helped me during my internship in Paris as a financial assistant. In my final year, I chose French as my optional module, as I wanted to continue improving my language skills upon returning to England.

Can you tell us a bit about your experience of studying / working abroad? Would you recommend it to other students?

As part of this International Business with French course, I studied at KEDGE Business School in Marseille for a year and a half, where I was able to complete a six-month internship in Paris.

Marseille is an amazingly vibrant city with the breathtaking views of the Calanques National Park on your doorstep. There were so many clubs, associations and societies to get involved in, making it an experience of a lifetime. I would 100% recommend studying abroad, you get to embrace new cultures, improve your language skills, develop your independence, and most of all you, create unforgettable memories with new friendships from all around the world!

What three words would you use to describe Nottingham?

Lively, inviting and diverse!

How have you found Nottingham as a student city?

Nottingham is a brilliant city for students and has a high student satisfaction rate, which was one of the selling points for me when choosing this university. There is a very good society culture with many to choose from, and lively nightlife if that is something you are looking for!

Did you find it easy to make friends at NTU?

During my first year at NTU, it was challenging to make friends on my course due to the restrictions from COVID, however I still made friends within my accommodation. I would also say returning from two years studying abroad has also made it harder to make friends, however, NTU create a supportive environment to learn in, whilst making friends at the same time. I also joined the Tennis and Study Abroad societies in my final year to socialise and make new friends.

What do you think of the support available at NTU?

Throughout my journey at NTU, both in Nottingham and abroad, there has been extensive support available for me. Whether its academic support, transitioning from the UK to France, concerns while abroad, or career guidance following graduation next year. The staff create an environment where students can thrive both personally and professionally.

What's next for you after NTU?

After graduating, I am planning to take a year out and travel around the world, to continue exploring new cultures. I would love to travel to South America, and potentially take on some volunteering opportunities to enhance my experience and personal growth. Ultimately, after returning from travelling, I would like to find a graduate role relating to my degree.

Has the employability team helped you plan for a life beyond NTU?

I have recently signed up for a scheme where NTU will provide support landing me a graduate role within three years of graduating. This program emphasises NTU’s commitment in helping their students achieve their aspirations. There have also been numerous networking opportunities such as careers fairs for students to attend and seek potential career paths.
