Tell us a bit about yourself
I am based in Nottingham and have worked for The Campbell Clinic Group for approximately nine years. There are two sides to the business, a private dental practice providing a range of dental services, with particular focus on implant dentistry and a dental training company providing implant and business education.
Outside of work, I live with my partner and our eighteen month old Labrador. I like keeping fit by playing football and going to the gym, and I am a big Arsenal fan and have had a season ticket for nearly twenty years now.
Why did you choose Nottingham Business School and your course?
I wanted to gain a deeper understanding of digital marketing. When I started the degree, my role at work covered most areas of the business, but I was most passionate about marketing. I had largely self taught myself up until this point and wanted to support my own learning with a university qualification.
At the beginning of the course, my role was the General Manager of The Academy and I was juggling lots of different responsibilities in addition to marketing, operations and finance etc. However, since starting the course, I have been promoted to Marketing and Education Director and I am now fortunate enough to spend a lot more of my time on marketing projects, the area of my work I have always been most passionate about.
What motivated you to enrol on your course?
Largely to upskill and develop as both a person and a digital marketer. I felt that I wore many hats for the business and was a valuable employee, but my lack of specialism in one particular area concerned me! I enjoyed digital marketing and for several years and had self taught myself to a large degree. But in order to become more valuable to my current employee and to broaden my career prospects, I decided I needed to pursue some formal training and this course seemed like the perfect next step.
What is your favourite thing about your course?
Without doubt the onsite sessions at NTU. I enjoyed so much being in the university environment and mixing with the other students on my course and lecturers. I felt I took so much away from these days with regards to knowledge which I could apply directly into my work. These days inspired me, were lots of fun and are ultimately the thing I miss most from the course.
Would you recommend the course to other students? What advice would you give them?
I would definitely recommend the course to other students. You will learn so much, grow as a person and as a professional and meet some great people along the way
Be prepared to work hard. It’s enjoyable and rewarding, but it is challenging. You must be prepared to put in the hours.
What do you think of the support available at NTU? Think of your course staff, student support, the Employability team, etc.
The support was fantastic. Help is on hand whenever you need it from all areas of the university. This is not just directly related to your studies, but they also care deeply for your wellbeing and appreciate it can become challenging at times for students who are juggling university, their day job and just normal life in general.
Although I did not look for other career opportunities, you are regularly pointed in the direction of the employability team which is so helpful or anyone who is looking for the new step in their career.
What does you current role involve?
My current role is split between both sides of the business. For The Campbell Clinic, I am responsible for leading a small marketing team and directing the strategy for our marketing. For The Campbell Academy, I have overall accountability for the performance of this education arm of the business. However, my day-to-day role again largely focuses on building a marketing strategy to fill our dental implant and business courses.
How has your career developed since finishing your course?
I have remained in the same business, during this time we have grown significantly and my role has also changed. The course was crucial in providing me with the knowledge to take the next step in my career.
Do you have any tips for success?
With marketing, my belief is that the most valuable characteristic to possess is the appetite to learn and grow all the time. To act as a sponge each and every day and soak up as much knowledge and ideas as you can from a variety of sources. Marketing does not stand still, it continuously evolves and the more time you put into learning about the subject, the better your chance is of succeeding in your career. Subscribe to blogs, email newsletters and relevant Instagram or YouTube accounts. Commit to learning every week and it will compound and put you in a great position.
What's next for you in your career?
We have some really exciting projects in my work and I am really looking forward to playing a crucial role in these and helping the company achieve its goals. We have plans to build another seven surgery practice next door to our current practice, and develop our orthodontic and general dental services. Our Academy is also growing and we are building some exciting new courses and partnerships with overseas organisations.
