Why NTU
What inspired you to study your subject?
"I had previously done voluntary work with children and young people and after taking a gap year I decided I wanted a career in education. I decided I wanted to be the educator I didn’t have when I was younger and help shape future generations."
Why did you choose your course and NTU?
"I chose Education Studies at NTU because I liked the broad range of modules and how it allowed me to be flexible with my career path in education. I also liked how it was entirely coursework based as I don’t cope well with exams and was able to chip away at assignments over time."
What’s your experience been like of your course so far? Can you pick out any highlights?
"For me, one of the highlights of the course so far has been the Outdoor Education module. I already enjoyed working outside and the module was a great opportunity to combine two of my passions into one. The module has since led me to consider Outdoor Education as a future career option which I hadn’t thought about before starting at NTU."
What does Social Sciences mean to you?
"To me, Social Sciences means improving current systems to benefit future generations. Education policies and practices are constantly evolving and having the ability to change those for the better is important to me."
Support
What do you think of the support available from tutors and staff at NTU?
"There is a lot of support from tutors and staff at NTU, from student wellbeing services, to academic advice in the library. Everyone is always happy to help or to point you in the direction of someone who can."
Outside of the Lecture Theatre
Did you find it easy to make friends and settle in at NTU?
"I found it pretty easy to settle in at NTU. As a student living at home while studying, I was nervous about making friends, but everyone was really friendly and feeling the same way. There are lots of opportunities to meet new people during freshers and there is a society for everyone which helps you find your crowd."
Advice
What top tips would you give anyone thinking about studying your course at NTU?
"Keep an open mind when thinking about your end career goals. As the course is so broad a lot of people change their mind about what part of the education sector they want to go into. I found I got the most out of the course when I allowed myself to explore different pathways and gain as much experience as possible."
Clearing
Why did you choose to apply to NTU through clearing?
"I chose to apply to NTU through clearing for a variety of reasons. The course appealed to me which was a big factor, but also everyone at NTU was super helpful during the clearing process. This made me feel comfortable right away and helped my decision. I also liked how NTU was in commuting distance from home, so I didn’t have to move away last minute."
How did you secure a place on your course through clearing?
"I phoned the NTU clearing hotline about two weeks before clearing closed and enquired about a different education course. I didn’t quite make the grade requirements, but I had a large amount of childcare/education experience, so I got offered a place in Education Studies. This ended up being best for me as doing this course has now opened my options as an educator and I couldn’t be happier with my decision."
What advice would you give to anyone applying through clearing?
"Even if you’ve not quite got the grades for the course still make the phone call. You never know until you try and even if you don’t make it onto the course you enquired about you might still get offered a place on a similar one. It’s better to take the risk and have everything work out then leave it and regret it later."
