More about Daniel
Why did you choose NTU and this course?
I chose NTU because I wanted to build on my background in Pharmacology while developing the skills I need for the next stage of my career. I already had experience in clinical research, but I wanted to strengthen my scientific knowledge, gain practical research experience and challenge myself academically. The MSc Pharmacology course offered that balance. It has allowed me to develop both technical and transferable skills, from laboratory research and critical appraisal of scientific evidence to problem solving, independent working and communicating scientific ideas clearly.
What has stood out about your course?
It has encouraged me to think beyond simply knowing the science and to think about how I can apply it. My research project has been a particularly valuable part of that experience. It has required me to work independently, analyse evidence, troubleshoot problems and make decisions based on the results I obtain. These are skills that I know will be valuable regardless of which area of the life sciences I ultimately work in. The course has also given me a broader perspective on how scientific research connects with drug development and healthcare, which has been especially relevant to my career interests.
How have you found the course facilities and have they helped you?
I have found both the laboratory and library facilities very helpful throughout the course. The laboratories have given me the opportunity to develop practical skills and apply what I have learnt to my research project. I have also really appreciated the 24/7 library access on the Clifton campus. It has been particularly useful when I needed a quiet space to study, read literature or work on my dissertation outside normal university hours. Having access to both has supported different aspects of my development, from practical research skills to independent learning, critical reading and academic writing.
What has been your favourite thing about your course?
My favourite thing has been the opportunity to develop skills that go beyond the classroom. The MSc has challenged me to become more independent in how I approach problems, assess scientific evidence and communicate my ideas. The research project has been a big part of this because you are not simply giving answers. You have to ask the right questions, work through uncertainty and decide what the evidence is telling you. Those skills are important to me because I want to build a career in the wider life sciences and healthcare research space, where being able to understand science is just as important as being able to apply it, communicate it and work with others.
How have you found Nottingham as a student city?
I have really enjoyed Nottingham. It has a strong student atmosphere while also giving you plenty of opportunities to develop a life outside your studies. I have particularly enjoyed the diversity of the city and meeting people from different backgrounds. Coming to the UK to study has been an opportunity to grow both academically and personally, and Nottingham has given me a good environment to do that.
Have you felt supported through your studies?
Yes, I have felt well supported throughout my studies. My academic tutor, Dr Rajic, has been approachable and supportive, while my project supervisor, Dr Negus, provided valuable guidance throughout my research project, helping me become more confident and independent. I’ve also enjoyed using the Global Lounge, which has been a great place to meet people, relax and recharge. Overall, I’ve really valued the support and sense of community at NTU, both academically and personally.
What is next for you after NTU?
I want to build on my experience in pharmacology, clinical research and scientific research and progress my career within life sciences and healthcare research. I’m particularly interested in roles that connect science and research with improving healthcare. My experience at NTU has shown me the range of opportunities available, from laboratory and clinical research to research operations and scientific programmes. The MSc has given me the scientific knowledge, transferable skills and confidence to take the next step in my career.
