I have loved studying at NTU, the way the course is structured has meant that as a parent, the work has always felt manageable alongside having a family and commitments outside of university.
More about Jordan
What made you choose to study at NTU?
I chose to study at NTU because it was one of the few universities that offered an IBMS (Institute of Biomedical Science) accredited degree, which is essential if you want to work in the NHS as a biomedical scientist. After attending the open day, I was impressed by the range of facilities available at NTU, including its 'super lab'. I was also really interested in the placement year that they offered. Plus, I really love Nottingham as a city as there is always something to do and being in the Midlands makes it accessible too.
What has been the highlight of your course so far?
There have been so many highlights, but if I had to choose, I would say getting to use the lab for practical sessions has been a top highlight for me. During the lab sessions I really discovered my love for microbiology and was very lucky to have some amazing lecturers that really supported me and taught me so much. From this, I was extremely fortunate to gain a placement opportunity in the microbiology lab at the Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham which I have absolutely loved! I also found out that I had won two academic awards at the end of second year, which I am really proud of.
What are your future plans after graduation?
After graduation, I hope to stay in Nottingham and work as a biomedical scientist in microbiology and potentially do a masters. I also find public health and epidemiology really interesting, so this is something that I would like to discover more about as well.
How have you found studying at NTU?
I have loved studying at NTU, the way the course is structured has meant that as a parent, the work has always felt manageable alongside having a family and commitments outside of university. I have had the opportunity to learn about all the different disciplines of biomedical science, and it has provided me with both practical and theoretical knowledge that are essential for my chosen career. Without NTU, I would not have gained my placement in the lab, which has been invaluable in gaining the experience needed to be a biomedical scientist. Alongside that, I have made some friends for life!
What advice would you give to others?
My advice to anyone joining the course, or thinking of joining the course, is to always step outside of your comfort zone and take every opportunity!
