Why NTU...
Why did you choose to study a postgraduate degree?
"After completing my bachelor's degree in Criminology, I felt motivated to deepen my understanding and expand my expertise in the current field. To me pursuing a postgraduate degree meant that I was given an opportunity to explore more advanced concepts and gain a broader perspective on the subject and the world around me. I believe that continuing with my education will enhance my knowledge but also open doors to a wider range of career opportunities in the future. After all, knowledge is key!"
Why did you choose your course at NTU?
"I had chosen my course at NTU for various reasons. One was that it was close to my home as I have lived in Nottingham before so it made it a convenient choice. Secondly, NTU offered a range of courses that aligned more closely with my future career goals, providing the flexibility and depth that I was looking for. Last but not least NTU has had impressive rankings, especially top ranking in employability, which was important in my decision as I value strong career opportunities and support."
What’s your experience been like of your course so far? Can you pick out any highlights?
"My experience of the course so far has been both intellectually stimulating and engaging. The modules have been thought-provoking, covering a wide range of complex topics that deepen my understanding of international relations and security. One of the highlights has been the in-depth discussions we have in class. These discussions have allowed me to explore different perspectives and critically engage with the material provided.
One of the highlights for me was in the 'IR Theory' module. For one of our assessments, we were assigned a piece of literature to read and then discuss it in groups. I really enjoyed the opportunity to share my interpretations of the text while also listening to the insights and perspectives of my peers. We were able to share ideas which made the discussion feel more dynamic and informative. Overall, the collaborative learning environment has been a key part of what I’ve appreciated most about my course so far!"
Have you been involved in any projects or extra-curricular activities that have supplemented your studies run through NTU?
"Alongside my usual studies, I have also become a course representative for my current program. This responsibility meant representing my group by collecting any feedback they may have about certain modules and sharing it with the course committee where we further discuss these issues and outline possible solutions or suggestions. This has given me an opportunity to be further involved within my student community but also allow me to build up some of my essential skills which are needed for my future career aspirations."
What does Social Sciences mean to you?
"To me, Social Sciences is about understanding the complexities and depth of human behaviour, society, and the systems that shape our lives. It’s also about studying the ways in which people engage with each other, how they work in a community and how social structures and society can impact a person’s experience. It means being practical and working directly with people from a range of backgrounds or pursuing a career in frontline services and helping transform people’s lives!"
Support...
What do you think of the support available from tutors and staff at NTU?
"I have been genuinely impressed with the level of support offered by the tutors and the staff members here at NTU. They have made an effort to get to know me and understand my personal goals and form a good relationship which made me feel welcome and valued as a student. The staff are always approachable and knowledgeable – no matter how many questions I had ( definitely plenty), they were patient and thorough in their responses. I believe their level of commitment to providing support has made a real difference to my experience here."
Outside of the Lecture Theatre…
Did you find it easy to make friends and settle in at NTU?
"Personally, I found the transition to NTU and settling in to be a smooth and positive experience, especially when it came to making friends. The people on my course were quite welcoming, friendly and easy to get along and connect with. I have formed some really nice friendships, and we had met up outside of studies to spent more time together. We have plans for more adventures and it has really helped me feel more at ease and part of the NTU community."
The Next Steps…
What’s next for you after NTU?
"After completing my studies at NTU, my main goal is to pursue a career within the security sector, particularly in roles such as an Intelligence Analyst or Security Consultant. I am passionate about applying the knowledge I’ve gained through my degree to real-world challenges, especially in the areas of risk assessment, threat analysis, and strategic security planning. I see this as an opportunity to contribute to global security efforts and make an impact in a field that is highly relevant in today's world. However, I also like keeping my mind open to new and broader career opportunities in the future."
How is NTU helping you to achieve your career goals?
"I found NTU to be quite useful and supportive in helping me prepare for my future career goals. NTU has hosted careers fairs multiple times too which I attended and had an opportunity to speak to employers in my field of interest and get further information regarding my next steps. Additionally, the employability team provides additional support by sending out weekly updates on job opportunities that are relevant to my interests. This has been a great resource for me personally as it helped me stay informed and take measured steps towards my future."
What advice would you give to help new international students get settled in at university?
"Whilst I have lived in the UK for the majority of my life, the advice I would give is – step out of your comfort zone and get yourself out there. University may feel daunting as an international student but take the opportunity to get yourself involved in any societies or activities that interest you. The NTU community is incredibly friendly and welcoming, so make the most of that support and connection. Engaging with others can really help you settle in and make the most of your time here."
