Why NTU

What inspired you to study your subject?

"I really enjoyed the content that is taught, especially learning about childhood and the correlation between this and offending. It explained why young people offend and keeps the perspective of them being children rather than just a criminal."

Why did you choose your course and NTU?

"This was the first university open day I attended with no intention to apply as I thought it would be too close to home. However, Youth Justice really intrigued me so we came to look at what it was, I was instantly drawn into the content and the careers it could lead to. I have always wanted to work with children but choosing Youth Justice made me realise I wanted to work with children with adverse childhood experiences that haven’t had the best start in life. NTU gave me the chance to explore that further and I have no regrets choosing this subject."

What’s your experience been like of your course so far? Can you pick out any highlights?

"I really enjoyed the court visit in third year. I have my own experiences of court and it changed my opinion on the whole experience. Having the opportunity to sit in on a case, I was incredibly grateful to get the chance to observe the sentencing and afterwards had the opportunity to talk to the prosecution and barrister on the case."

What does Social Sciences mean to you?

"I have always studied Social Science subjects throughout my education, so I have wanted to work with people for a long time. I thrived in Health and Social Care and have a very empathic drive, so working with vulnerable people has always been on the cards for me and it is something I am working towards. Since I was 14 I have volunteered with children from afterschool clubs, and young people with special educational needs at Saturday activities."

The Next Steps

What’s next for you after NTU?

"I want to discover specifically what I enjoy through work experience and volunteering to understand what pathway I want to take. My own barriers got in the way of me doing so in second but rather late than never."

How is NTU helping you to achieve your career goals?

"Every year they display options with employability, I am yet to use the team, but I will in April to help look into my options with work experience and different pathways. There are always workshops at NTU regarding young people."

Advice

What top tips would you give anyone thinking about studying your course at NTU?

"Do your research into what every course has to offer and don’t let others influence your decision because in the end it is what you have to offer not them. This is your degree and its hard work, don’t make it any harder on yourself doing something you have no interest in. NTU has so many courses to choose from so I’m sure there is something that catches your eye.

It’s a life experience that for sure, don’t take it for granted and take every opportunity."
