More about Laila

What inspired you to study Adult Nursing at NTU?

"My journey into Adult Nursing began not in a lecture theatre, but as a patient. Following the birth of my first child, I experienced significant physical, emotional complications that affected my confidence and sense of identity. Over the course of a year, I required ongoing support from both General Practice and hospital services. During this time, it was the nurses who had the greatest impact on my recovery. They provided outstanding care, truly listened and recognised me as a person rather than a condition. Their reassurance, empathy, understanding helped me rebuild my confidence and it was then that I realised nursing was what I wanted to do. To provide that same standard of compassionate, patient-centred care to every individual I encounter.

Returning to education as a local, mature student and a mother of two has been a transformative experience. Studying Adult Nursing at Nottingham Trent University has enabled me to grow academically, professionally and personally. Being part of a professional course has strengthened my confidence, sense of purpose and I am proud of the progress I have made. NTU stood out to me for its strong reputation in healthcare education, its close links with NHS trusts, emphasis on employability, clinical competence and student support. The integration of theory with real-world practice has been central to my development as a student nurse."

What has your experience been like of your course so far?

"My experience of the course so far has been extremely positive. I particularly value the mix of academic learning and clinical practice. I enjoy applying what I learn at university directly into placement settings. I have completed three placements each year, which have been invaluable in helping me build knowledge, practical skills and professional competencies. These placements have given me a realistic insight into the working world of healthcare and the importance of multidisciplinary teamwork. I have also benefited from insight days in specialist clinical areas, which have broadened my understanding of different nursing roles and patient pathways.

Some of my most memorable moments on placement have come from meaningful conversations with patients, when they feel comfortable enough to express themselves openly and trust me with their experiences. These interactions have reinforced my passion for holistic, patient-centred care, the importance of recognising everyone’s unique needs, values and circumstances.

Alongside my studies, I am fully invested in the wider nursing community at NTU. I am involved in the development of the new nursing curriculum and work as a Student Coach. I am also a Mature Student Ambassador and Nursing Ambassador, supporting prospective students through open days, interviews, simulation sessions and individual guidance. Being involved in these roles allows me to give back to the course, support others particularly those returning to education and contribute meaningfully to the future of nursing education at NTU."

What do you think of the support available from tutors and staff at NTU?

"The support available at NTU has been exceptional. Tutors are approachable, encouraging and genuinely committed to student success. The university’s library and academic resources have been instrumental in supporting my learning. This strong support network has made it possible to balance academic study, placements and family life."

What’s next for you after NTU?

"Looking ahead, my goal is to qualify as a registered adult nurse and work within the NHS, delivering high-quality, compassionate care within the community. I am motivated to continue developing professionally and am open to pursuing further study. This may include a master’s degree, to build my knowledge and capabilities. NTU has equipped me with the confidence, skills, values to progress with ambition, resilience and a deep commitment to person-centred care."
