Why NTU

Why did you choose to study a postgraduate degree in Youth?

"I choose my postgraduate studies at NTU because I had some experience in the sector and I wanted to gain a degree from a UK university. NTU was a good choice because it is a vibrant university with lots of opportunities for students. The fact that is one of the modern universities meant it was a match for me."

Why did you choose to study MA Youth Work Leadership and Practice at NTU?

"I was attracted to NTU because of the practical experience the university provides. The courses are more hands-on than theoretical, which is the case with my MA studies qualification. Having placement opportunities as part of the course was important to me.

NTUs values are all about inclusion, equality and providing opportunities - and I knew this was something I wanted to be part of."

What’s your experience been like of your course so far?

"I have loved my course and the classmates and lecturers who have helped make this the best year of my life so far.

The highlight of the course for me has been the support from the academic team. Whenever I've needed help I've been able to get in touch with the course team who have always been so helpful and insightful.

I've loved the interaction and the way the lectures are delivered. Our course is full of conversations and sharing experiences which have made me think a lot about my future career plans.

I have learnt so many skills that will help me once I complete my studies in the world of work. I've learnt a lot about youth work as a profession, as well as how to behave yourself as a young professional in any setting."

Have you been involved in any projects or extra-curricular activities that have supplemented your studies run through NTU?

"I had a part-time job as a student ambassador for the Centre for Community Engagement, and I volunteered in a youth centre in Nottingham as part of my placement. I was also a Course Representative which was an amazing experience to be part of the Students Union as well and go for interesting events such as Mental Health events. I've been part of so many events which has made my student experience so special."

What does Social Sciences mean to you?

"For me, Social Sciences are building and studying the connections between humans and society. This can make life hard sometimes but also beautiful and insightful."

On Placement

Have you completed any work placements on your course?

"I did a placement at a Youth Club in Nottingham as part of the SEND project through the Greenway Centre. It was 400 hours of placement working with children and youth. It was an amazing experience where I had the chance to share my culture and learn about others too.

I learnt how to organize activities, and how to communicate, as well as safeguarding in the UK. I became more leader in terms of my work and sector which will stand me in good stead for the future.

The thing I enjoyed the most was making connections with those from a different background. It was an amazing learning process and I've become more resilient and emotionally intelligent as a result."

Do you have any memorable moments from your placement?

"My most memorable moments relate to doing artistic workshops with children and reflecting on my own childhood experiences through these. I realised no matter where we come from or what language we speak, we can connect through art."

Support

What do you think of the support available from tutors and staff at NTU?

"The support at NTU is amazing. I've made the most of the help on offer from tutors and mentors during my studies which has been so reassuring, particularly during stressful periods. My tutor was there to remind me that I was here because I deserve and can do it!"

Outside of the Lecture Theatre

Did you find it easy to make friends and settle in at NTU?

"Yes. As a Postgraduate student being here just for a year, at first it can feel daunting to make friends. But, there are a lot of activities and events you can join to socialise. NTU is my home and here I feel accepted like nowhere else before."

The Next Steps

How is NTU helping you to achieve your career goals?

"NTU provides opportunities, skills, support, and instructions. There is lots of help available from the employability centre which always has different workshops organised to boost our skills and confidence."

As an International Student

Why did you want to study in the UK?

"I wanted to know more about this country and culture and studying in the UK will allow me to pursue my career ambitions."

What experiences have you had as an international student at NTU?

"My experiences have mostly been positive and I have felt included and accepted. My highlight has been experiencing UK life. I love the people so much and they have always been accepting of me as a international student."

What advice would you give to help new international students get settled in at university?

"In the harder times reflect on why are you here and keep an eye on your goal. It will be hard, it is always hard when you want to achieve something big, but it pays off in the end.

Get involved, ask questions and get out there!"
