More about Lucy

Why NTU?

What inspired you to study BSc (Hons) Psychology (Mental Health)?

"My own experience with anxiety and mental health sparked my interest to learn more about how the brain works and how people’s feelings and behaviours are affected by internal and external factors. Studying psychology at A-level only reinforced and expanded my interest as I learnt more about the subject and the career opportunities it opened up."

Why did you choose your course and NTU?

"I chose the psychology course at NTU as I was most drawn to their selection of modules. They reflected my favourite areas of psychology and seemed really engaging and fun. On top of this, through the open days, I could see that NTU was an extremely welcoming university with so much to offer in terms of extra-curricular activities and social events."

What’s your experience been like of your course so far?

"So far my experience of the psychology with mental health course has been eye-opening; I have learnt so much already and my curiosity has only grown. Workshops are engaging and having the opportunity to conduct my own small studies has definitely been a highlight of the course for me. On top of this, there are so many helpful and knowledgeable members of staff who cover an incredibly diverse range of specialities."

What does Social Sciences mean to you?

"To me, social sciences is all about helping people, and this can be done in so many different ways. Helping to destigmatise mental health and create a safer space for those suffering is a really key aspect of this for me. I think that by increasing our understanding of our own mental health and that of others we can create a space where people are more tolerant and compassionate."

Support

What do you think of the support available from tutors and staff at NTU?

"In my experience staff at NTU are very helpful, especially your personal tutor who is your go-to for support and general queries. I have recently been diagnosed with ADHD and contacting the university in regards to this was quick and easy to do. Support options are clearly laid out and emphasised throughout the academic year."

Outside of the Lecture Theatre

Did you find it easy to make friends and settle in at NTU?

"I was very lucky to find two of my now closest friends during my first week at NTU. This was definitely in part due to the opportunities available during freshers’ week as I met one during a welcome talk for my course, and the other whilst attending the freshers’ fair (where you can browse the many societies available at the university). Outside of this, I met two of my other best friends through my course as well and made many friends through societies such as NTSU Sing."

The Next Steps

What’s next for you after NTU?

"I’m not currently sure what my future post-university holds for me, but there are many chances at NTU to explore your options and I feel that studying psychology opens many doors for future careers. As I feel my interest lies in mental health, this specific course has inspired me to look into careers focused on helping people to live more comfortably with mental health conditions."

How is NTU helping you to achieve your career goals?

"NTU has provided me with the tools and information to find work experience opportunities in a range of psychology fields. The employability team specifically are equipped to help people in this area and there are many employability experiences that we are informed of throughout the school year."
