More about Tawanda

Why NTU?

What inspired you to study your subject?

"My inspiration came from a long way back as a carer through noticing that patients are frequently vulnerable and expect nurses to be honest and make decisions with their best interests in mind. Studying for a BSc (Hons) in Adult Nursing provided me with the ability and knowledge of caring for my patients with integrity and a strong focus on patient advocacy and bringing my best qualities to work to promote positive patient outcomes."

Why did you choose your course and NTU?

"I choose NTU because the university is anchored on a sustainable and inclusive learning atmosphere that is augmented by diversity. The quality of teaching, learning and support is outstanding. NTU presents a platform for everyone to showcase their unique cultural identity as well as refine their knowledge and skills."

What’s your experience been like of your course so far?

"The process had its own ups and downs; however, my strength was built upon those experiences, and I proudly call myself a product of NTU Nursing School. Many lecturers were always at hand, willing to help as much as they could."

What does Social Sciences mean to you?

"Social sciences to me means understanding different aspects of human societies and individuals’ behaviours and interactions with each other built upon technology and natural environments”. Also understanding of the intricacy of human experiences in the area of health, illness, and social arrangement of care."

On Placement

Have you completed any work placements on your course?

"My placements were based in different wards and areas including A&E, Specialist Receiving Unit, Intensive Stroke unit, Oncology ward, Orthopaedics ward and Acute medicine. Along the journey, I have had an opportunity to transfer theory into practice and build on critical hands-on skills. Placements challenged my classroom knowledge and provided me with the real-world experiences required to set me up for my future nursing career.

I gained so many skills that can be applied in other professions other than healthcare such as preparation, scope of practice, professionalism, communication, patient-centred care, dealing with challenging situations, understanding of the importance of interdisciplinary healthcare teams, teamwork, feedback from colleagues and patients, advocating and treating people with dignity."

Do you have any memorable moments from your placement?

"Being kind and smiling to a patient goes a long way and it makes a difference. Just hearing from patients saying my kindness made them feel better was a huge motivation."

The Next Steps

What’s next for you after NTU?

"I am an Emergency Department Nurse now, planning to do a master’s to become an Advanced Clinical Practitioner in a few years to come."
