What form and duration of experiential learning optimises graduate outcomes; an impact study of experiential learning opportunities within and beyond the HE curriculum

  • School: Nottingham Business School
  • Study mode(s): Full-time / Part-time
  • Starting: 2025
  • Funding: UK student / International student (non-EU) / Self-funded

Overview

Many Higher Education institutions, and in particular Business Schools place emphasis on the process of learning by doing, or experiential learning, on the basis that engaging students in hands-on experiences and reflection will enable them to connect theories and knowledge conveyed in the

classroom to real-world situations and in turn, improve graduate outcomes (e.g., student attainment, progression and graduate employment prospects).

The aim of this research is to understand which forms of experiential learning are the most powerful in terms of enriching graduate outcomes and what qualities (e.g. duration, employer proximity, student readiness etc.), are crucial in this process. The study is likely to follow a mixed methodology, exploring qualitative accounts of experiential learning and its impact, alongside data sets within which experiential learning and associated graduate outcomes can be analysed.

The research should help Higher Education institutions to design, deliver and support high impact forms of experiential learning.
