Core workshops

Our core workshops have been designed with the student lifecycle in mind and are aimed at students taking level 3 qualifications in schools, sixth forms, and colleges across the UK.

We deliver the right information at the right times throughout the attendees’ journey to ensure that they are prepared to apply for, and study at, university.

These sessions will contribute to you achieving Gatsby Benchmarks One and Seven.​

Workshop 1:
What university can do for you​

• Who: Year 12
• When: September–December
• How long? 45 minutes

• Future benefits and employability
• Integrated work experience
• How student finance works
• Opportunities available to kick start your HE journey now.

Workshop 2-4:
Researching your options

• Who: Year 12
• When: January–June
• How long? 20 minutes per part

You can book as individual parts, or have all three parts together in one session.

Part 1: What to consider when choosing a course

• Courses available
• How you’re taught
• Social aspects
• Deciding what’s important to you
• Interactive ‘match a student’ task.

Part 2: Making the most of Open Days, Experience Days and exhibitions

• What is an Open Day?
• UCAS fairs and subject experience days
• Why it’s important to visit
• What to look for and ask
• Personalised checklist activity.

Part 3: The importance of place

• Different ‘types’ of university
• What is a student city?
• Distance from home
• Cost of living
• ‘What works for me’ activity.

Workshop 5:
The UCAS process

• Who: Year 12 / Year 13
• When: May–July (Year 12) / September–October (Year 13)
• How long? 30 minutes

• Understanding entry requirements
• Deadlines
• UCAS Hub (the online application)
• Tracking and understanding offers
• UCAS Extra
• Results day and Clearing.

Workshop 6:
Personal statement workshop

• Who: Year 12 / Year 13
• When: May–July (Year 12) / September–October (Year 13)
• How long? 60 minutes

What’s covered?

• What is a personal statement?
• What to include?
• Skills and evidence
• How to enhance it
• How to structure it
• How to start it
• This session uses a toolkit so each student has something tangible to take away.

Workshop 7:
Student finance and how to manage your money at university

• Who: Year 13
• When: January- April
• How long? 45 minutes

What’s covered?

• Student finance clearly explained
• The main costs (tuition fees and living costs)
• Funding available
• Maintenance loan broken down by household income
• How to apply Interest rates and all the finer details to explain why this is more a tax than a loan
• Money management and budgeting activity.

Workshop 8:
Results day and Clearing

• Who: Year 13
• When:March-May
• How long? 30 minutes

What’s covered?

• What happens on results day?
• What is Clearing and who is it for?
• How the Clearing process works
• Tips for settling into university life and dealing with the transition from sixth form/college into university.

Visiting the campus and mixing with NTU students is a real eye-opener, and our students come away enthused and motivated. Each year we rely on the team at NTU to show our students the possibilities of higher education, and they do it so well.​
