Every minute, a man dies by suicide — a staggering 60 men each hour. The male suicide rate is approximately 3 times higher than the female rate., with male university students, especially those on financial aid or facing academic challenges, being at particularly high risk.

In recent years, there has been a growing push to normalise discussions around male mental health, encouraging men to open up about their feelings and seek support. While well-intentioned, this approach often falls short by not equipping men with the practical skills they need to effectively express their struggles.

To genuinely support men’s mental health, we need to provide guidance on how to communicate effectively. A powerful tool in this effort is the ALEC model, pioneered by the Movember Charity. ALEC — Ask, Listen, Encourage Action, and Check In — offers a clear framework for initiating meaningful conversations and supporting men in accessing help.

This Talking Circle, taking on this approach, unites Male Mental Health Champions, students, staff and peer mentors from the Peer Support scheme to discuss the importance of supporting, and how to support, men’s mental health and the role we each play in fostering open, effective dialogue.

About the Talking Circle

Programmed in collaboration by the School of Social Sciences’ Dr Paul Hamilton and NTU Arts, the Talking Circle is designed to challenge the status quo and recognise the value of healthy dialogue – and the importance of disagreeing agreeably – in addressing some of the most pressing social issues of our time.

You'll find the Talking Circle on Level 1 of the Newton Building, City Campus, next to Café Newton. No need to book, just drop in, pull up a chair, and listen in.
