Canary Wharf Opera House

I based my project on the Canary Wharf area of London, as this space is known for being one of the biggest business centres in the capital. My idea is to improve the interest in the area generally with a focus on improvement from an entertainment perspective, providing efficient working and relaxing spaces for the performers and musicians at the same time.

The proposed building is a new modern Opera House, which intends to make this area more popular. It includes a new green landscape to continue the green corridor from Westferry Circus onto the proposed site, implementing new cycle routes and footpaths.

Modern Opera houses in Asia, such as Harbin Opera House and Guangzhou Opera House, inspired the project. These buildings are both easily recognisable, with the project following the same principal in terms of shapes and raw forms of the external façade.

My initial ideas were led in a more organic direction, looking at the River Thames nearby and the shapes of different sea creatures. As a result, the proposed project has a ‘shell’ structure principal – with the main outer façade covering the whole footprint of the building, keeping separate from the internal structure of the building. This design would protect the inside secondary structure from any weather conditions.

This project aims to show how one person could generate something that would go beyond the general boundaries of design, to push modern architecture into a futuristic direction.
