Nottingham Trent University (NTU) BA (Hons) Graphic Design graduates Eve Wallis and Alice Stone took home the prestigious award for their inventive campaign ‘Train Like an Olympian’.  Their brief was to ‘design the decade we deserve’ by selecting an article from the first issue of The Guardian newspaper in 2020 and then selecting a brand from the given list of 14, delivering a creative response.

Eve and Alice have each won £400, a trophy and a paid placement with Design Bridge’s London Studio, which will take place remotely due to the current Covid-19 restrictions.

Eve and Alice chose an article about the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and interpreted it for the brand Durex, cleverly referring to “the most popular sport in the world” in their designs. The judges commented: “The design execution is bold and simple and flexes the brand’s equities in a playful way that feels very intuitive. Eve and Alice have come up with an incredibly powerful and inclusive concept and they have executed it brilliantly – these two are ones to watch.”

We spoke to Eve about her win: “Me and Alice are both over the moon to have won this award. It is amazing to see NTU Graphic Design take the two top spots, with Dan Swainson being the runner up!

Our project, Train Like an Olympian, was inspired by the Tokyo 2020 Games, which was cancelled due to a world pandemic. Sex is the world’s most popular sport and ‘Train Like an Olympian’ challenges the consumer to get fit with Durex in time for Tokyo 2021, whilst advertising safe sex.

The project was completed during the first lockdown, which meant endless facetimes and calls! Me and Alice loved collaborating and generating fun and quirky ideas. It was a much-needed project, that was very uplifting and hilarious to create.”

We asked Eve what she enjoyed most about studying with us: “NTU was a truly amazing and unforgettable experience. I would highly recommend the university and the Graphic Design course. I learnt a great deal from my lecturers, and they were always very supportive. I can’t thank them enough!”

Kathryn Coates, Principal Lecturer in Graphic Design and Illustration, commented: “The Graphic Design team is incredibly proud of the achievements of our students. It's fantastic to see Alice and Eve having their project being recognised with such a prestigious award, their idea was simply brilliant!

We also had fellow student Dan take a runner up slot with another great piece of thinking. This really demonstrates the depth of talent we have on our programme.”
