The winners of a competition for Nottingham Trent University students on its Textile Design course have been announced by the competition organisers, British fashion brand Joules.

The brief was set by Joules fashion designers Lillie Turner and Rachel Sanders and asked students to develop a theme inspired by the Great British countryside.

Students were required to propose a concept, title, and colour palette before developing a final design that could be for any of the Joules product categories – including womenswear, menswear, childrenswear, home and even pets!

Congratulations to the following students who were selected as winners by the Joules design team:

Rachel Moody – Knit Specialist
Kayleigh Shannon – Print Specialist
Sophia Marshall – Embroidery Specialist

Commenting on the competition, our winners said:

Sophia Marshall: “I loved working on this project for Joules and the freedom they allowed us in initiating our own brief in response to the Great British countryside. This project made me more aware of what to consider when designing for a commercial market, and this has helped me in my other design work. I really enjoyed producing this work and I am so grateful to the Joules team for the opportunity!”

Rachel Moody: “Taking part in this competition was such a valuable experience, giving us an understanding of industry and what it is like to design for a brand. I especially enjoyed the brief Joules set us as it allowed me to create fun, vibrant designs inspired by my personal favourite place in the British countryside, my dad’s vegetable garden, while still staying true to the much-loved Joules brand. I’m grateful to Joules for this opportunity and to our amazing tutors for organising it!”

Kayleigh Shannon: "It's been an absolute privilege and great fun working on the Joules competition brief. I'm very grateful to the University for arranging live competitions as they provide us with the opportunity to gain valuable industry experience. I'm honoured to be chosen as one of the winners and will look forward to working with Joules on placement."

Providing students with the experience of working with professionally set briefs in the fashion and textiles industry is an important aspect of the School of Art & Design courses. Partnering with a prestigious brand such as Joules provides a great opportunity for students to show what they can do and receive valuable feedback from industry professionals.
