Marwa Ali, a final year BA (Hons) Photography international student from Alexandria, Egypt has had work included in a major publication and exhibition, titled ‘Encapsulated Volume 1: Photoessays on Khaleejiness’.

This project deals with the self-exploration of identity, more specifically how Marwa analyses her own identity and accept Khaleeji identity into her own.  The essay gives an in-depth insight on what khaleejiness means to her alongside her multi-cultural background.

We spoke with Marwa to find out what Kahleeji means to her.

“For me personally I describe khaleejiness as the bridge that connects an individual to khaleeji culture and heritage. That journey is unique for everyone as individuals shape their khaleejiness, that's why it's really difficult to pin a definite definition to it. It's a subjective lens that depends on the person exploring that identity."

The work has been published by SWALIF Publishing House, which is an independent collective based in the UAE. The word SWALIF in Khaleeji identity means conversation and interactions and you can check out her amazing work here.
